We had the good fortune of connecting with Harvey & Amy Mulder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Harvey & Amy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We are family owned and run business. Spending quality time as mama and son was always a priority. We would spend our time creating art, antiquing, playing music and dancing, and just being together. Having already had a successful business, we thought it would be fun to start something new that would allow us to spend more time creating together.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Comfy Bear Home started after Harvey at almost 4 years of age had his tonsils and adenoids removed and his sinus tissue shaved down inside his nose. Three weeks post surgery he was washing his hands and was suddenly startled and said “wow! This soap smells GOOD!” It was the first time he realized soap actually had a smell. He became obsessed with scents and all things bathroom related… soaps, bath bombs, bath salts, etc. That same fall we clipped down our lavender to dry it and make Christmas gifts with. We decided on goat’s milk soaps since we all have sensative skin. We loved it so much and so did all of our family and friends they asked us for more! Harvey loves developing new scents all of the time. He can take fragrances I think are disgusting, mix them together with other fragrances and create something that everyone falls madly in love with smelling. He has an incredible gift! And he loves telling people he makes everything and earning money from what he calls his ‘science.’

We are called Comfy Bear because Harvey’s nickname is Bear and we spend most of our time in our pajamas, which we call our ‘comfies.’

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Harvey: The beach. I love staying at the beach all day. We have lunch and an umbrella and tent we take and my dad and I play in the water all day. There are great waves to body surf on.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Harvey: My dad because he has helped us organize, work at markets, and is patient with us while we make messes and trying new things.
