We had the good fortune of connecting with Gritty Flyright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gritty, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my friends, family, musicians, and essentially the music itself…I’m probably most driven by hearing a story that moves me emotionally. I am always in search of an artist that can arrange the lyrics to strike an emotional chord or connect me to the imagery in the song. Currently, the two living songwriters that I draw a great deal of inspiration from are Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers. They both consistently engage the heart with their songs and I’m grateful to be exposed to such incredible storytellers.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer/songwriter based in Charleston, South Carolina. Growing up in the Rural South, I have always been exposed to and have a deep appreciation for storytelling. I enjoy writing stories that are locally inspired from truths in my own life. I feel like this is a better representation for what Country Music is in America. I started out playing songs from other artists who inspire me with their own experiences like Otis Redding and John Prine. Over time, I incorporated my own life into lyrics and was able to create my own music. I’ve learned that for me, being the person behind the lyrics of the story is the most gratifying, because when someone recognizes or connects with your story, it’s you and your life being lifted for being yourself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I guess it depends on the friend. I would likely expose them to the local scene hear in Charleston…Some of my favorites: The Charleston Pour House for live music, Crosby’s Seafood and Bowen’s Island for fresh seafood, James Island Cowboys for taking a trail ride, Native Knowledge Experiences for some quality time on the water, Paul Puckett for fine art / studio, LoFi Brewing for a local beverage, Harold’s Cabin for some fellowship, Fresh Haircut at Anthony’s Barbershop, Seven Star Liquors for a local spirit, and a trip down to Bert’s Market on Folly Beach to find just about anything you could possible need.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is a village of family and friends that continue to support my music. My good friend and producer Ian Guthrie certainly deserves a special recognition for not only his exceptional work behind the board, but also his commitment to each artist that he collaborates with. Ian aka “Scottish John” gives so much time and energy to his projects leaving no stone unturned. I’m thankful for his patience with some of my creative process and language used to navigate the best music possible for each of my songs. With me, he understands that I’m less concerned with organizing a product to package and sell and more dialed in to helping me tell a story from my life. When you work with Ian, you can be completely vulnerable with your art, because he’s not worried about putting his “Stamp” on the project. He just wants to put a strong foot forward by making the best music possible.
