We had the good fortune of connecting with Eva Frye Kolb and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eva, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks can be scary, but it absolutely gets easier with practice! Speaking up for what is right is an integral part of Time Capsule Design, and that can often feel risky. We are taught to fear rocking the boat – we aren’t supposed to disrupt systems – but we often don’t achieve change and growth without taking risks. This applies both to the art I create and the messages I put out there, as well as business and financial decisions. Making art intended to elicit an emotional response is risky in itself, but it is what draws my audience in and creates a feeling of solidarity and community.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I make protest art inspired by current events, especially in the socio-political sphere. My art is subversive and aims to make people think twice. I often reinterpret popular logos – the familiar draws people in, then the details are what drives the message home. I’ve taken the Eras Tour poster and redesigned it with some of our oldest and longest serving politicians in place of Taylor Swift – they’re in their retirement era. The country crock margarine tub has been twisted into a country crock of shit featuring Marjorie Taylor Green. Another favorite is sweet baby rays barbecue sauce morphed into an eat the rich design – pour sauce on your boss (sweet baby rays is Mark Zuckerberg’ s preferred condiment).

Social media has been instrumental in my success – it has helped me promote my art and find my niche. My art is definitely a love it or hate it kind of thing, and I appreciate that social media has allowed me the space to feel safe in both feeling that love and dealing with the hate as well. Neutrality only benefits the oppressor, and my art leaves little space for neutrality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live between Greenville and Spartanburg, so I feel I get to enjoy the best of both cities! We have such amazing art throughout the upstate, from murals to the mice on main to museums and co-ops. Our outdoor spaces and parks are amazing as well – Hatcher garden, unity park, and falls park are some favorites. We have an amazing variety of cuisine in the area as well. I love our international options – like Ali Baba and Tea Star in Spartanburg, Aryana and Sofrito in Greenville. For foodies, the tasting menu at the Anchorage is an absolute must do. I love walking around and exploring our beautiful downtown areas and other hubs, there are a plethora of unique small businesses to discover and enjoy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shout out to all the educators out there. I am incredibly thankful to learn from many different and diverse people who share their life experiences with transparency, vulnerability, and strength. In this particular moment, I want to thank the citizen reporters posting from Gaza, like Plestia, Bisan, and Motaz.
