We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Yadira Báez-Lockard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Yadira, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I have a clinical and forensic psychology practice and they both each our community in distinctive ways. The clinical practice helps children, families and individual of all ages develop healthy coping skills as well as gain insight regarding their difficulties so they can build a better and healthier life. The forensic practice aids the judicial system when making life pivotal decisions by educating the courts. It is difficult for individuals to put aside their biases and misconceptions, and as such, individuals’ lives are at stake, in particularly that of minorities. I believe that the more we educate our judges and those in the legal system, perhaps one day, minorities will receive equal and just treatment.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I earned my Master’s degree and Doctorate in Psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois. I specialize in the field of forensic psychology where I have the opportunity to provide my professional expertise to aid the judicial system in civil and criminal matters. I am passionate about what leads to individuals commit crimes by conducting examinations and being an expert consultant for the courts. The journey of establishing a private practice in the south has been quite a challenge. As a Hispanic female, I have encountered many adversities and roadblocks that made me questioned not only my profession but humanity. I. learned that with each obstacle we faced, we can learn and use that knowledge to grow and help others. I recalled a time that an attorney refused to call me doctor in court. I corrected him on numerous occasions yet he refused to addressed me by my earned title. I could have gotten upset, yet it would have not changed the way he felt or thought about women or minorities. My experiences have taught me that I cant change prejudice and/or racism but I believe that with education, we can help shape the next generation.
I believe in rendering a fair and just opinion that is not based on feelings, biases and/or misconceptions. As an expert, I focused on the evidence as well as factors including, environmental, societal, and mental health issues.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I truly enjoy visiting Greenville. Since I moved to South Carolina 10 years ago, I have seen this city grow and flourish. It is so important to be surrounded by individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds which is why I love how inclusive Greenville is becoming. I would definitely take my friends and family to one of the many Latino restaurants in Greenville where you can get amazing food while also enjoying live music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve had the love and support of my children who encouraged me and supported me as I completed my goal to become a doctor.
