We had the good fortune of connecting with Domanique Keegan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Domanique, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a freelance hair and makeup artist, I think before I felt like I needed to work daily or I felt unproductive or that I wasn’t doing enough. Now, 8 years later I’m happy to say I welcome my days off and use them wisely. Instead of feeling like I’m not doing enough I’m thankful to spend time with family or catch up on chores. Overworking leads to burn out so I’m happy I’ve finally found a nice balance in the wedding industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I’m a multi-cultural hair and makeup artist from Charleston, South Carolina. I thoroughly enjoy my craft and it makes me super proud that I am able to service anyone that sits in my chair regardless of skin color or hair type. Getting here wasn’t easy but with perseverance and genuine love for my craft I’ve managed to put smiles on some of the best faces! I’ve learned that when you truly love what you do the blessings flow. I have also learned to love the constant overflow of knowledge that comes with being a hair and makeup artist. I want the world to know that if you have a dream and you believe in that dream, it will always come to fruition!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I first would have us go to Coast Skillet for brunch, then the African American Museum. I would set up a beach day at Folly and enjoy some vitamin D and stop by Citrus Club at the Dewberry for happy hour drinks.
Coastal Skillet is my favorite brunch spot!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out Latia with Latia Curtis Fine Art Beauty. She has been such an inspiration and mentor to me for the last few years and a constant reminder that you can be a mom, a wife, and a bomb hair and makeup artist! She is constantly uplifting and providing spaces for artists like myself to do what we love! Everyone needs a Latia in their lives!
