We had the good fortune of connecting with Desmond Gentry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Desmond, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
While attending an employee meeting, they were discussing the direction of the company as well as raises for the upcoming year. It hit me that they really didn’t care about my well being and that I would never truly be paid my worth. I began brainstorming ideas of starting my own clothing line. On November 28,2020, I introduced Destined4Greatness Apparel LLC. I knew if I left my job to be a entrepreneur I would need consistent income to start as well as maintain my clothing line. So I begin to show interest in becoming a Life Insurance Agent. I knew that my pay would be consistent as well as a long list of benefits. I was still not sure about stepping out on faith and leaving my job. I would be lying if I said that I did all of this on my own. I would like to give credit to my wife, Mavis Gentry, she convinced me to leave my job and assured me that we would be good. Just two weeks after getting married and having Desmond Gentry II ( KING ) August 6. I told my job the following Monday that I wouldn’t be back and haven’t looked back since.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of Destined4Greatness Apparel LLC and a Licensed Insurance Agent with GameChangers Insurance Group. What sets me apart with both of my businesses is that I chose them so that I can serve others. Being able to help people create generational wealth as well as offer a clothing line that defines your greatness at the same time. What excites me with both of my businesses is that l’m able to educate people on the importance of life insurance as well as keep them updated on the latest fashions at affordable prices. Being a businessman had to grow on me because it was something different. Was it easy? no it was never easy to leave consistent money to now workin for myself. I will say it’s not for the weak. You have to truly believe in yourself even when things get hard and you don’t see the results. I’ve learned to appreciate other’s businesses, pricing and how much they put in to run their business. I show more support to others even if it’s just reposting their information because I would like the same. I would like the world to know that my goal is to change the world one person at a time with Life Insurance while also changing their style with Destined4Greatness Apparel.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to a food truck called How Bout Them Apples for the best seafood Phillies in the city for lunch. Or one of three restaurants Los Mayas Mexican Restaurant, Tasty’s or A Touch of Skillz for good food. If they need a clean hair cut drop in on B. Smith Da Barber of JAP & JAB Grooming lounge our or Faded Luxury Suite by Keenan. Next I would take them downtown Greenville to the Gather. And end the night with my family the most competitive family every in a few games of bowling at Paradise Lanes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my mother for always being there for me. She is constantly pouring in me that I can be more than just average.. Next I would like to thank my dad for nicknaming me “Champ” and speaking life into me that I’ve always been Destined4Greatness. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank my loving wife, Mavis Gentry. She is forever pushing me to try new things and to venture out. From day one she has challenged me in so many ways and she seems to know what I’m capable of. Without her staying on me about certain things, I would still be working in a plant and wishing I had a way out.
