We had the good fortune of connecting with David Critzman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but un-conquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee.”

― Herman Melville, Moby Dick

I’ve always loved this quote. To me, in the most general sense, it means just keep rolling. In this story Captain Ahab is going after a large white whale that had taken his leg, and he is going to do whatever it takes to conquer this “beast”. I believe the quote translates well into any significant pursuit in one’s life and the drive that fuels one to pursue it.

By developing a disciplined mindset and prioritizing self improvement, I wound up making key changes in my own life, that I wanted to be able to express in a clothing brand.

Focusing on the pursuit, voluntarily putting yourself in challenging and uncomfortable situations, avoiding the comfort that we all wind up clinging to when things get difficult. Allowing yourself to evolve, adapt, progress. In the end it always comes down to you versus you. We are in most cases our own worst enemies and if we can adapt behaviors to be better suited to navigate when the turbulence of life appears, the ride can be far less shaky with the now adapted mental fortitude. Always progressing, never content.

The identity of “Jack Hill” was created to embody this lifestyle. Jack Hill is an unshakable seeker, adventurer, a risk taker. The goal was to create this identity, that others would hopefully aspire to be like; someone that motivated the pursuit in their own lives.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Jack Hill is a local activewear brand in Charleston SC, focusing on versatile performance fabrics and daily wear. With every new challenge, there is an opportunity to adapt, evolve, and progress our products and ourselves.

By giving our brand an identity, character, and personality – people feel a stronger connection with our brand, not just as a consumer but part of a community. We like to emphasize our “WEAREJACKHILL” tag as a reminder the ideals that drive this brand are a collection of the people we meet, and the people that motivate us to keep progressing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Folly Beach is a great laid back spot for some sun, surf, and good vibes.

167 Sushi is my favorite sushi place hands down, very unique un-traditional options I have yet to match elsewhere

Collectivo is also a great spot on Johns Island with great food, unique options, great atmosphere

One great thing about Charleston is there is always a new spot to check out, and a great mix of options.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
