We had the good fortune of connecting with David Borisuk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Photography impacts the community in a variety of ways, but my favorite is the way it brings people closer together and strengthens relationships. Few other things are as bonding as looking through old pictures and reliving special moments together. Life is short and I want to be able to give my community beautiful pictures that they can look back on and cherish as long as they live.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I decided to call my photography business Preserving Nostalgia. This is my goal. I want to help people preserve valuable and meaningful moments, so that they always have something they can look back on when life and relationships gets difficult. I have been a part time photographer for a little over a year now. I want to provide a safe space for people where they feel free to be themselves and where genuine moments can be captured. What sets me apart from other photographers, is that I desire most for relationships to be deepened and moments to be not only kept, but beautifully preserved. The thing I’m most excited about is meeting new people and building new relationships. I have gotten to where I am today through a bunch of practice and research. There were a lot of times I felt like giving up, but I had to keep reminding myself of opportunities that were provided when I least expected and how important consistency and patience is. I have learned so many lessons during my time as a photographer.
1. Photography has encouraged me to be more grateful about the little things. Looking through the lens and planning your photo forces you to stop and look for the beauty in everything. Stopping and looking for things to be thankful for is such an important skill to have.
2. Photography has forced me to be more mindful and present. When you are taking photos you are in the moment.
3. Photography has allowed me to build such strong connection and relationships. There is something really bonding about taking people photos and seeing them be themselves. I have been able to have such good conversations and capture such genuine moments.
I heard a quote one time that said “You will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” This has changed my perspective on life drastically and my business. My goal is to take the special moments in life and preserve them through photography, so that have something that you can look back on when life gets hard. It might be cliche, but the basis of my business is love for people and God’s beautiful creation. This is what drives me and I want it to be clearly expressed through the photos I take and the relationships I build.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were in town, we would probably wake up super early and grab coffee at Bridge City (the best coffee shop in SC) and scramble to make it to Pretty Place Chapel before sunrise. After spending a generous time enjoying the view, we would make our way to Tandem for breakfast. After we got a bite to eat, I would show them around all my favorite shops in TR and then we would head somewhere to grab lunch. Probably a burger place. Either Bad Daddy’s or Grill marks. Once we finish lunch I would walk with my friend around Falls Park and the Grand Bohemian Hotel. For dinner we would probably get Sirin Thai. After that we might go watch a movie at the cherrydale cinemas and that would probably wrap up our day!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The biggest influence and encouragement to me and my business has been my family, specifically my sister-in-law, Claire. Claire used to be a professional wedding photographer and she would always let me play around with her camera whenever she came to visit. As a was always fascinated by the minuscule details it was able to capture and I think this is where my love for photography began. She saw how much I loved photography and asked me if I was interested in shadowing her as she shot a wedding. I couldn’t be happier! After walking through the whole day with her, I knew this was what I wanted to do long term. After I purchased my own camera and became comfortable with the many settings, she asked me to be a second shooter for one of her weddings. This was by far the most beneficial experience in getting me ready to be independent and the next fall I was able to shoot my very first wedding. Claire has been my biggest role model and encouragement on my journey to become a professional photographer and I owe all of my skills and knowledge to her.
