We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Yother and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, why did you pursue a creative career?
We have all been raised in and around music and it’s definitely something that we want to continue doing throughout our lives. Being able to be in a band together allows us to continue doing that while still having fun and it pays for some of the expenses. While we are still just starting out and didn’t even initially think of being a full-on “band” when we had our first few gigs, we are looking forward to the opportunities ahead. We have had a lot of fun traveling together, showing each other new songs, and recording an album which will be released in the fall.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The Wilder Flower is a folk band with heavy roots in old-time and bluegrass music. We love to write our own songs as well as play covers. Our genre of music can be hard to describe because all of our backgrounds in country, bluegrass, Americana, old-time, singer/songwriter, gospel, and folk blend together differently with each song we do. This in itself can set us apart but the fact that our trio is an all female group does make us stand out.
We are really excited to play at a lot of gigs this year locally as well as around the country. We are even more excited to release our very first album this fall! We have spent a lot of time and energy on it and are looking forward to sharing it with everyone.
So far the easy part has been playing music and the hardest part is having to act like a business. We’ve still got a long way to go to be able to look back at ourselves but learning how to communicate and making sure that we’re all wanting to go in a similar direction have been valuable lessons so far. What we hope to do is inspire others to play the music they love.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Madeline is from Brevard, NC but Molly and I are both from around Pickens, SC. I would say some spots to hit in Pickens would be Bee Well Honey for some coffee, there are a bunch of great shops on main street, and Table Rock State Park is beautiful. If you’re ever in Pumpkintown, where Molly is from, you should stop to eat at the Pumpkintown General Store.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We wouldn’t be playing music without our supportive family, friends, teachers, and community. It would take too long to list every single person but I’ll mention the YAM (Young Appalachian Musicians) program, Oolenoy Bluegrass jam, and our producer Ryan Stigmon for helping us with our upcoming album.
