We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlene Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlene, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting out I wanted to create the experience I would want with getting a massage. Providing a safe space where everyone felt comfortable, were heard, and not rushed during the appointment was very important to me. I wanted to build a relationship with each client where they felt cared for during their sessions. With having children I needed more flexibility with my schedule but still pursuing my dream of being a therapist, it has taken some time finding the balance of both.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have wanted to be a massage therapist since I was 9 years old, this has been my dream of mine for a long time. I am passionate about what I do and I feel that comes across with my work. I love to encourage people to take care of themselves with small steps and meet them where they are. I love working on all different types of people from babies, to Ironman athletes, expecting mothers and the elderly. I grew up in Alaska and found my 1st class learning Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian massage) and Reflexology. We were in the middle of nowhere in Alaska and within the first day of being there I knew this is what I wanted to persue. I moved to Hawaii shortly after and started school focusing on medical/neuromuscular massage. I’m so thankful for all of the different work environments I have had over the years, they have all helped shape the way I run my business now.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the beach so we would definitely go to Folly beach and sit in the sun and play in the water. There are some fun mini golf places around like Pirates Island Adventure golf. One of my favorite restaurants in the Fort Mill area is Spice Asian Kitchen, they have a fusion of Thai, Korean, Indian and Japanese. The lychee martini is amazing also.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my story to my husband, children and clients. Through all of life’s changes and curve balls I have always felt supported through all of the choices I have made to get here. I am so thankful for my family especially for giving me space to pursue my dreams. For my clients who have stayed with me through life’s ups and downs, I appreciate each one of you!
