We had the good fortune of connecting with Charity Dent and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charity, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a creative career because I am a creative individual. Using my creativity doesn’t make what I love to do feel like a job. It’s a passion.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Music has ALWAYS been a huge part of my life. From growing up in the church until now.. it has and will always be here. No matter how many times I’ve tried to let it go or run from it, God always brought me back to it. Photography is something that I’ve always been into. This time, I’m the one behind the camera and not always in front of it. Journalism sparked my interest last year Thanksgiving break. It’s allowed me to use my love for music and combine it with sports.
I’d say what sets me apart from others is that I actually love and enjoy what I do. I’m not doing or interested in these things due to money or what these occupations can do for me. It’s about me using my gifts and talents and bringing what I see to light for others to see.
I’m most proud of not only working towards obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Music, but running a business and working towards my career goals at the same time. I’m excited to see what else God has in store and what’s to come in my career. I can’t wait to see where I go and how much I grow.
Everyday is not the best day. Everyday I don’t always give 100% but I keep going. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to remain patient but always be consistent in what you’re doing. Progress over perfection!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I could give a tour of Columbia, the first place I’d take my first would be the River Walk. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. You see nature, meet nice people, and see consistent beauty in the views.
Now if it’s a week long trip, one of the first places we’re going is the Zoo. I’m a BIG nature and water girly so anywhere with views I want to go or visit. As far as food? Id honestly just want to try new restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to first give honor to God. Without Him, none of what I’ve been doing would be possible. I’m blessed to have been blessed with the gifts and anointing He has given me.
Secondly, I’d like to thank my family, church families, and friends for their unwavering support and love. It means a lot to me. The prayers, small messages, encouragement, and love never goes unnoticed. Thank you for being there for me and believing in me and what God has given me.
Lastly, I’d like to thank my Allen University family for their support and guidance to my dreams and endeavors. The amount of support I’ve gotten has been immensely appreciated. Thank you for not only believing in me academically but creatively as well. My peers, instructor Mr. Milford, the AU Football Coaching Staff, the AU Admissions Faculty… everyone at Allen who supports me continuously. Thank you!
