We had the good fortune of connecting with Carol Koenecke-Grant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carol, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
People say that you are never quite ready for your next position and that can be daunting. Early in my corporate career, I decided that the most important thing I could do to succeed was to learn everything I could about people, workplace culture, job duties, and expectations, and be open to feedback, instruction, and direction. I would put my head down, work hard, and put my energies into achieving and growing the organization. That is where the courage to take a risk is critical. You will never know what you can achieve until you step into the situation. Take that risk and trust that others will help and support you.

My dad often said that if you match your passion with your career, you will never work another day in your life. So I decided to leave Corporate America and pursue my lifelong dream of operating a Victorian Bed and Breakfast. Dad was right. Despite grueling hours, laundry that never ends, and early mornings, I love every minute of everyday and have the best guests one could ask for. Pursue your passion and you will never work again.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I operate Flowertown Bed and Breakfast in beautiful historic Summerville, SC. Owning and operating a bed and breakfast has been a life-long dream. I love sharing this grand old home with others and quickly opened our doors to the Summerville community through Porch strolls, Garden and Holiday tours, and special events. Word of mouth and 5-star reviews have allowed us to host weddings, baby and bridal showers, and High Teas. The unique ambiance and award-winning gardens create an event experience like no other and our business continues to grow. Throughout the years, I’ve learned that we all do the best we can and I have the ability to help guide people through any number of experiences.

I can promise a magical experience at Flowertown Bed and Breakfast. Time here is a journey back to a time when life was simpler, family and friends gathered together to celebrate, and life surrounded you with a big hug.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A carriage ride in Charleston, a visit to the Angel Tree, a sunset cruise on the Ashley, a culinary tour in Charleston, strolls and tours through historic Charleston. A day at Isle of Palms, a day trip to Beaufort or Savannah, a visit to one of the plantations, and lots of time in downtown historic Summerville to sit, sip, shop and enjoy the beautiful day.

p.s. I have developed a Free Guide which is on my website that has an entire itinerary of what to see and do when visiting. Here is the link:

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe everything to my wonderful husband, who supports my dream, tolerates my love of all things Victorian, and works 24-7 to ensure my happiness. My two adult children made my corporate career possible by attending daycare without complaint and cheering me on, even when I was away from home for weeks at a time. Finally, my sister is my biggest fan. She makes me laugh on the most difficult day and is always there for me.
