We had the good fortune of connecting with Captain Jimmy Skinner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Captain Jimmy, what do you attribute your success to?
I think I can contribute my success in this business to a few things. I was fortunate to start guiding at an early age and in a small town where the market wasn’t over saturated with fishing guides. Also the people I’ve surrounded myself with. My loving and supportive wife, and my great friends and business partners the Fontaine family.
My part is simple really. You just have to be able to connect with people and treat them right. If they enjoy their time on the water with you they’ll be back year after year!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been very fortunate. Certainly there has been some steep learning curves especially in my early years as a guide. I think as long as you keep trying to get better (with any line of work) you’ll always be successful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Edisto Beach is very small! But there are a good many restaurants. I’d recommend any of them but my favorites are probably Briny Swine, McConkey’s Jungle Shack and SeaCow Eatery. One place you have to see while you’re here is Botany Bay. It’s a very cool walk through the maritime forest and dune system out to a boneyard beach covered in petrified oaks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Edisto Seafood and the Fontaine Family. Without these life long friends of mine I would have never got into this and would certainly not had a place to operate. Thanks for all y’all do for me and my family.
