We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caitlin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always loved being creative. Growing up I did lots of crafts(hello early 90’s with all the puffy paint projects and friendly plastic) and I always moved the furniture around in my room. At one point I wanted to be an interior designer. Even now, my favorite hobby is a creative one. I love to cross stitch.
When I was 14 I took cake decorating lessons at the craft store with my mom. It was something fun for us to do together, but my mom ended up not enjoying it while I loved it! That is where I learned about a local vocational high school and making cake decorating a career.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Cakelin’s Cakes and Cookies was always a little side business, but it truly started in 2014. We had a horrible babysitter experience with my son, and I decided I could no longer work out of the home. I quit a job, that I loved, to be a stay at home mom. That didn’t last long because I wanted to financially contribute to my family. I decided this was the time to really make Cakelin’s work.
I started a Facebook page and asked everyone I knew to share it. It started off slowly, some weeks with no orders. Over the following years my business has grown! Spreading mostly by word of mouth, but social media has also been a big help.
I make custom cakes and cookies for all kinds of celebrations. I recently made a four tiered cake and decorated cookies for a styled wedding shoot that will be featured in a bridal magazine. I am so proud of the growth that I have made in my decorating skills as well as the business side of Cakelin’s.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have had so much support from my family and friends.
My mom helped me start my baking journey with our cake decorating classes and helping me go to Johnson &Wales University.
Sean, my husband, has always believed in my dream and supported our family while I was starting my business. He and my kids continue to support me with helping packing cookies, deliveries, and market and wedding fair setups.
I also have to shout out all my friends in the hospitality industry. Fellow cake and cookie makers, balloon artists, wedding and event planners-they have all helped me in my career and personal life. I love that we all value community over competition!
