We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Singleton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
My great grandmother, Ms. Irene Singleton, always taught me that giving up is NEVER an option. As I grew older, I realize life is extremely hard, which will make giving up being our only option; because we often feel it is too much to bare, too much on our plate, and so stressed that we can’t seem to keep going. But FAITH, believing in yourself, and saying “hey, yes I may have reached a fork in the road, a difficult hurdle to jump across, but if I give up and turn back around, I’m only heading back to square one, exactly where I’ve started from; but if I KEEP GOING, who knows the wonders I’ll embark upon. Why give up today, when tomorrow might be the day you win!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a graduate of South Carolina State University, Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology in May of 2015. I currently attend The Citadel Graduate College , pursuing a Masters of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering, graduating May of 2025.

Upon graduating with my Masters in Civil Engineering, I wish to return to South Carolina State University to obtain a Master in Business Administration, to help build my businesses. I am also a notary public, mentor, and business owner. I am the proud owner of my catering business, B’s Passion Flavors, LLC and Founder/ President of Black Woman Empowerment, my non-profit organization for young women aging 7 to 18 years of age. I work full time as a Site Manager for Brownstone Construction Group, a local private construction firm.

The challenges I’ve faced in my career path is being an African American female in the engineering field. It is very hard being a black woman in what I like to call, a “man’s world”. They often looked at me as I don’t belong in this line of work. I really had to put my best foot forward, continue my education, show that I do belong, and worthy of becoming a Engineer.

I’ve learned not give up on my dreams when I encounter difficult obstacles in my journey and to always remember why I started!

I strive to be the best that I can be every single day! Becoming whom I needed growing up, a role model for my son and also for young black girls who grow up in the projects without any guidance. I hope to own a black owned construction company and open up a community center for the youth in the near future. My love for helping the youth in my community aim for success, gave me the extra boost I need to keep going in my career field!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love touring the Downtown Charleston area for the historical scenery and amazing restaurants. My favorite restaurants are Hyman’s Seafood, Halls Chophouse, The King Claw, and Longhorn Steakhouse. If I want to get a quick bite to eat and meet up with my friends, I always go to Bar on the Ave located in North Charleston. Fun activities I love to do by myself or with friends are axe throwing at the Axe Joint in Summerville or Chuck town Axe Throwing in North Charleston, Top Golf in North Charleston, and bowling at Royal Lanes in Goose Creek. Charleston, SC have ALOT of festivities in the spring and summer time, my favorite is the Black Food Truck Festival and Charleston Caribbean Jerk Festival.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my son Gerald A. Burns III, my village who’ve motivated me to keep going, and to my non-profit organization, Black Woman Empowerment.
