We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Opperman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve been drawn to music for as long as I can remember. It has been a constant companion throughout my life, providing a space for me to express myself. I love the way it fuels our emotions and connects us to other people. My hope is that through singing and songwriting, I can be a friend to someone in whatever circumstance they are experiencing. I consider it a great gift to have the ability and opportunity to pursue a career in something that brings so much fulfillment. It is not something I ever want to take for granted.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love to bring a song to life. More than hitting every note accurately, (although that’s important!), I want people to really feel the music and be drawn in to whatever story is being sung. In an industry that values social media followers, streams and revenue, it can be easy to forget that what I do is an art form. Art exists to bring beauty into the world, drawing people together, and I think that happens in a genuine way when I am being genuine myself. That is the fine line that I am still learning to walk as an artist – creating in a way that allows me to pay my bills and be authentic. When I stop to consider the highs and lows of this journey, I’m reminded that it has been the moments of connecting with other people that have brought the most fulfillment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d definitely spend a day wandering downtown, popping into the local boutiques, like Two Cumberland and Bobbles & Lace, checking out the beautiful historic homes on the Battery and enjoying the food scene. A latte from Harken Cafe, wine and a charcuterie board (the best in town!) from Uncork, small plates from Prohibition, dinner at The Ordinary or FIG if you can get reservations, and ice cream from Off Track. Elliotborough Mini Bar is a fun neighborhood hang as well, especially if you’re looking for live and original music. I’d also take them to Sullivan’s Island for a beach day, bike around Kiawah and take a jet ski tour from Tidal Wave Watersports.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel very blessed for the support system that I’ve had over the years. My dad was the first person to really encourage me to pursue music. He managed me in the beginning and opened doors that helped me to build my confidence when I had none. My husband, Nick, deserves a ton of credit too. He is active duty military and while that can be very demanding, he goes above and beyond to be at every show when he’s in town and to support me in any way that he can. I also have to mention my Sisters in Song community here in Charleston. In an industry that is super competitive, they are talented women who collaborate, champion, advise and encourage each other. It’s been a refreshing group to be a part of.
