We had the good fortune of connecting with Brelyn Lecheminant and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brelyn, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Alt Muse Co provides a regular, dedicated space for creatives to engage in face-to-face interactions, breaking away from their studios or workspaces. This encourages collaboration, idea-sharing, and the formation of supportive networks within the creative community. By keeping events low-key and accessible, we encourage people from all creative backgrounds, skill levels, and walks of life to participate. This inclusivity helps build a more diverse and open-minded community.
We highlight local artists, designers, and creative entrepreneurs, providing them with a platform to showcase their work, share experiences, and grow their influence within Charleston’s thriving creative scene. The open conversations at our events offer real-world advice on how to turn creative pursuits into sustainable careers, helping artists and creatives thrive in their own professional journeys.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been a creative problem-solver, and for the last 3 years, I’ve worked as a Creative Director, bringing brands to life through marketing, design, and strategy. What sets me apart is my ability to lead with both charisma and a deep understanding of how creativity can drive real results.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the founding of Alt Muse Co. It’s more than just a networking group; it’s a community for creatives to connect meaningfully, share ideas, and build each other up. This project excites me because it fills a gap in the Charleston community—a place where artists, designers, writers, and creative entrepreneurs can come together and grow professionally.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is the importance of building genuine connections. Whether it’s through Alt Muse or my career as a creative, relationships are at the heart of everything I do. I want the world to know that my work and my brand are about creating spaces where people feel welcomed, comfortable, and inspired to pursue their creative passions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well there are so many things… but if we start on a weekend, we would probably stop by the Harris Teeter and grab a bucket of fried chicken and potato chips, and go sit out on Folly Beach for the morning… until we get hungry and then we’d eat the fried chicken and snacks. By late afternoon, we stop by Chico Feo for a cold beer and maybe some live music in their backyard.
Another day, we’d wake up and cook breakfast at the house and eat al fresco in the backyard, playing with our three dogs. Then go ride bikes through the James Island County Park and grab a late lunch at Martin’s BBQ with a side of a football game.
Our other favorite spots are the Pour House Sunday Brunch Farmer’s Market followed by a hot dog and seasonal sides at Bar George, Graft’s Good Neighbor Sundays, a nice dinner at Sorelle or a casual coffee and lunch at the Sorelle mercato, and a tapas-style dinner at Estadio!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have quite a few amazing influences that encouraged me to create Alt Muse and helped me become the creative professional that I am today!
Currently I am the Creative Director at BHC, a hospitality collection in Charleston. The BHC team is always encouraging us to push further to make a difference in our community and to set and achieve goals that advance our professional skills and personal wellbeing. Experiencing the art of hospitality at these luxury properties every day inspires the way we conduct our Alt Muse events. We make sure that our attendees feel more than just invited, we make sure they feel welcomed, seen and valued.
Additionally I have an amazing group of supportive friends. I floated the Alt Muse concept by Ellen Schmedinghoff casually one day and let it sit for a while. Then, a week or so later, I received a text from Ellen that said “I think you really need to do this.” The support and encouragement from an amazing friend is sometimes all you need to hear. I’m so grateful for their continued support volunteering at events and helping me find happy hour locations.
And of course all of the amazing folks who have shared ideas, grabbed coffee with me, and continue to collaborate on our future events!
