We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Samuels and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One of my fondest childhood memories was while my peers collected baseball cards, I collected music. I always wanted to have the latest hit album or single at that present time. Over a period of time it grew into a massive collection and now, I have an entire room filled with different formats of music from vinyl, tapes, CDs, and now digital hard-drives. An old friend of mine was moving out of state and sold me his old DJ equipment. He basically said, “now that you have inherited all this music, you have to put it to good use.” I played around with it and had small parties in my apartment. I definitely was the least favorite neighbor in my complex. I really didn’t consider taking it seriously because I was conflicted and unsure about my next move with my full-time job at the time. I decided to further my education at the Midlands Audio Institute and also applied for a part-time position at my local radio station. I got hired, and one of the station’s DJs mentored me to become a professional DJ. From that point on, it was no turning back and was definitely one of the best decisions I ever made.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a firm believer in small details matter I always strive to go the extra mile. One valuable lesson I’ve learned over the years is that presentation and being professional is everything it will always open doors for your craft. Building a brand isn’t an easy task and definitely not for the weak that’s a challenge within itself. One thing about being a Professional Disc Jockey we are usually the first to arrive and the very last to leave the event. The drive to keep going and always find ways to improve has really been my motivation throughout this journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Outside of work I’m very low key and introverted so more than likely I’ll be going to very chill places around town. One of my first places would be Riverfront Park I’ve always enjoyed walking that trail with my dog. The second place I would visit for food would be Pearlz hands down one of my favorite seafood restaurants in the city. Next the Columbia Museum of Art their monthly exhibits are always worthwhile. I’m not too much of a nightlife person outside of work but I usually check out a concert at the Senate. If it’s the first of the month I would attend First Thursday on Main Street and also the Market on Main is a nice venue.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost these blessings wouldn’t be possible without God he is well deserved for all the praise. Next I would like to thank the support of my family they really been beneficial during this journey. I’m also beyond thankful for all the clients I’ve worked with over the years from Alpha Media Columbia, Rutherford Law Firm, Senator Jim Clyburn, Columbia Fashion Week, Pearlz, The Gala at JW, Black Nerd Mafia, downtown Greenville, countless brides and families it way too many to name but there the real MVP’s in my eyes.
