We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Burdette and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business my junior year of high school, I had just quit football, didn’t know what I wanted to do, and didn’t want to go to college. I’m not very good at taking orders. So I figured why not make my own, a friend of mine gave me his old camera, and after one shoot, I loved it. I used the money I saved up installing fences with my dad and bought my first camera.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Personally, I think what sets me apart from the millions of other artists in this field, is the fact that I’m not trying to be different from all the other artists. I’m just being me, I think that’s what over-saturates anything, people let comparison be the thief of their joy. I just like to shoot what I enjoy. That can be a concert one day, a professional sports game another, a moody portrait session, or a detailed shot of a nice slice of pizza. I’ve been told by so many people that everyone has their niche, that they stick to one or two things they normally take pictures or video of. But I think that’s what the standard is, and every great trend or story was started by someone that wasn’t afraid to stray from that standard. So no, I wouldn’t say anything was easy. The hardest part for me personally, was, and still is, is balancing work and life. When you let the work consume you, you forget to grow as a person, and that’s when you learn to prioritize.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live out in the country, but I commute to the city of Charlotte 4-5 days a week. So I’d say that Camp North End is the spot to go on a weekend. Multiple shopping spots, food spots, graffiti over certain spots of the whole area, very photogenic place.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are multiple people I want to shout out that have played major parts in my success. I’d like to thank both of my parents, for believing in me and my goal, and not only encouraging me to strive for what I truly want, no matter what the societal norm is. But also providing me with time, and giving me the TIME to create options for myself. I’d also like to thank Grace Sorrells, who has been doing this for way longer than I have, but was always a friend before we got into the same field. She has not only given me insights into the professional side of this business, but the mental side as well, she has guided me through multiple situations that I was not acclimated with and was very unprepared. My last shoutout goes to Ethan Rand, another friend of mine who has been doing this WAY longer than I have, but we met through this field and now he’s one of my best friends. He is a master of this art in his own way, and not only receiving the constructive criticism from him that every friend needs, but the banter of a true brother as well has been greatly appreciated. I’m truly blessed and I pray for both just them, but everyone else that has contributed to my career as well.
