We had the good fortune of connecting with Blair Worthington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Blair, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance has dramatically changed since the start of my career. In college, being in art school and being a creative person were (and still are) huge facets of my identity. I tied a lot of my self worth with my ability to create. As I grew into being a creative professional, first in my art career and now as a photographer, I have been able to separate the two and find much more peace. Having my two children helped tremendously with this as well, as it helped me go from seeing myself as a commodity to truly seeing myself as an artist.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m so proud of my photography business, which is primarily focused on weddings. I began my career as a watercolor artist and went to college for fine art. It was there that I really learned about what makes great art stand out, and there that I took a photography class. I worked as a watercolor artist for several years before I agreed to take a friends’ proposal photos and completely fell in love with the way I could use my artistic knowledge to compose a moment in someone’s story as fine art. I’m proud of that artistic background that makes me stand out, and proud that I have been able by God’s grace to build this business and incorporate film into it. The hybrid photography (combining film and digital) niche is a small one, but one that is so important to me when I think about how I can best preserve someone’s memories in a way that will look timeless in years to come.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think you definitely need a week to be able to truly enjoy all that Charleston has to offer! I would start by taking my friend downtown, to grab brunch at Babas and then to walk around and enjoy all the timeless beauty! It’s so fun to walk around and shop, or to go off the beaten path to the French Quarter, where I love the historic homes and beautiful florals. I’d take my friend around to the Battery and to Rainbow Row, it’s iconic! We would definitely need a day at Sullivan’s Island (maybe grab breakfast and a coffee at the Co-op to start!) for a beach walk or to spend the day sunbathing, and might have to make time for a meal at Obstinate Daughter, my favorite. I would also absolutely make sure to take her to Middleton Place, Magnolia, or Boone Hall to soak up all the beauty of the oak trees and spanish moss!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, I wouldn’t be the person or professional I am today without the absolute constant support of my husband. I wouldn’t have even taken the scary & vulnerable leap of faith that it takes to put your own art out there without his cheering me on. His encouragement literally changed my life! He is the unseen hero in my business, helping with so much behind the scenes and pointing my thoughts back to God in every area.
