We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Prior to having children I always thought I would want to go back to work (in a traditional sense). I felt I always had a strong work ethic and was surprised that I had no desire to return to work after having my daughter. I absolutely loved staying home with her and felt my priorities starting to shift- but I also didn’t feel truly fulfilled and knew I needed something that was just for me. I needed something that was challenging and fulfilling and allowed me to pour into myself so that ultimately I could be a better mom & partner. Having my own small business allows me the flexibility I need to be present with my family.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
No. 42 Cookie Company is a cottage bakery in Greenville, SC. We specialize in royal icing cookies and work closely with our clients to create custom edible art for all of life’s special occasions. I believe what sets me apart is my attention to detail, overall flavor and product quality, and a drive to master new techniques. I love learning from others so I can adapt and evolve in a challenging market. One thing I have learned that has helped me grow the most is staying consistent- consistent routines, consistent goals, consistent marketing, consistent learning and growing, consistent community interaction and the list goes on and on.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start at Falls Park on the Reedy. I absolutely love the feeling I get when I am walking downtown along the river. Sully Steamers is a great place to grab a quick breakfast! Or maybe we linger a little longer and have brunch at Tupelo Honey. Unity Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail are some of my favorite places so I would plan a bike trip with a stop at the Swamp Rabbit Café. Walking up and down Main St. and stopping in all the little shops is a must! My favorite lunch spots are Limoncello, Nose Dive or White Duck Taco Shop. I would also plan some great hiking around the area and a brewery tour. A local market (Travelers Rest Farmers Market is my favorite) would be a great Saturday morning activity. Dinner would be at Camp or Coral and my favorite place for after drinks is Swordfish Cocktail Club or the bar at Hall’s Chophouse.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to one of my dearest friends, Lisa. Lisa taught me the art of cookie decorating a few years ago and I have been hooked ever since. She has been one of the most encouraging individuals in all aspects of my life and this journey would not be possible without her! Thank you for always supporting me. And to my husband- I am so thankful for the love, support, and grace you give me as I navigate and grow my business.
