We had the good fortune of connecting with April Magill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I recently started a non-profit organization (501c3) in order to address community needs even more than I could do through my for-profit LLC. My mission, both as an Architect through Root Down Designs, and now as the Executive Director of the Root Down Building Collective, has always been focused on sustainable building solutions, affordable housing, and community empowerment. The new organization’s mission is ‘Advancing Regional, Climate-Smart, and Equitable Building Solutions.’

What should our readers know about your business?
Starting the non-profit has felt like an organic next step. I have an incredible board of directors comprised of 11 individuals, all of which eagerly accepted their positions to serve on the board and volunteer their time for the cause. I am reminded each day that this work is supported. The demand for healthy and sustainable housing solutions across the south has been greater than I can respond to and continues to grow, thus, the formation of The Collective is allowing us to broaden our reach across the Carolinas.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Tracy McCurty, Executive Director of the Black Belt Justice Center serves as the Chair to the non-profit and was constantly urging me to take this next step.
