We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Mulder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, how does your business help the community?
I love being able to use my gifting to tell my clients’ stories. It is always such an honor to be entrusted with one of the most important days of their lives.
A big thing I have wrestled with a lot in the last year is how to use my gifts as a photographer on an even deeper level.
So I have started a project to bring more visibility to the life changing work of missionaries around the world. I am starting in Kenya at an orphanage for children rescued from sex trafficking, FGM and forced child marriages. At this home, all of the children are given a free education, 3 hot meals a day, clothes, a warm bed, and are just able to be little kids again. They are also given counseling for all the trauma they have been through.
The purpose of this ongoing project is to create digital and print materials that communicate the help being given and lives being saved. Equipping them to tell the full story of the place and people they serve and the positive difference they are making. This will help to bring greater awareness and visibility for them along with more involvement from donors, ultimately leading to more impact. In telling these stories through photographs, our goal is to connect others as sponsors to this home.
It takes so much financially to sustain such a huge effort, and I am using my business to bring more visibility to the incredible work that is being done and bridging the gap to get others involved.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The connection I build with people goes beyond just being their photographer. So many couples of ours end up being wonderful friends. This connection also helps in showing their relationship and love for one another, their friends and their families.
The biggest lesson I have learned in the 13 years of my business is to always – ALWAYS – listen to my intuition. I have learned that the hard way. Not from my clients, but from peers. So I have also learned to distance myself from certain toxicity.
Soulfulness and intentionality are the two most important things for my brand. I put my whole heart in to every project, wedding, editorial, and education I teach.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For Charleston I would say they need to visit a rooftop bar. That is the best way to see the city and is so relaxing. My favorite park is Waterfont Park. But the one thing I always do with visitors is take them wandering through the streets. Charleston is such a beautiful city and has so much character in every turn.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband! He has been an enormous part of me being where I am. He has been my biggest cheerleader in every aspect of my business.
