We had the good fortune of connecting with Alison Hall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was born an artist. I’ve been creative my entire life. My mother was a decorator, and worked at home. Her office was filled with loads of colorful fabric samples, patterned wallpapers, trims & tassles. Great inspirations! I was always creating: Painting, drawing, building, crafting something. In high school, I became immersed in printmaking: Silkscreen, Etching, Intaglio. I setup a printmaking studio in my house, and sold my prints at art fairs. I continued my artistic pursuits in art school, attending Rhode Island School of Design. I focused on Graphic Design, Printmaking, Photography, Paper-making and Fashion Design.
I was a career Graphic Designer, with my own design studio for 25 years, focusing on branding, logo design, marketing & communications for a variety of industries. In 2020, I pivoted from Graphic Design to being a full-time Studio Artist.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been a creative. A born artist. Creating art, using color, texture, layers, interesting materials, and intricate patterns to make pretty things has always been in my soul. My mother was a decorator, and her office was filled with loads of colorful fabric samples, patterned wallpapers, trims & tassles. Great inspirations! In high school, I became immersed in printmaking: Silkscreen, Etching, Intaglio. I had a printmaking studio and sold my prints at art fairs. I honed my artistic pursuits in art school, attending Rhode Island School of Design, focusing on Graphic Design, Printmaking, Photography, Paper-making and Fashion Design.
I have been a career Graphic Designer, with my own design studio for 25 years, focusing on branding, logo design, marketing & communications for a variety of industries. But I was missing the more organic, hands-on studio experience. In 2020, I pivoted my career from Graphic Design to being a full-time Studio Artist, reconnecting with my applied art roots and art school education.
Back in studio for over three years, guided by my teacher, mentor/art guru Nicholas Wilton, I have reignited my creative muse. The joy I feel when in studio, combining my robust digital design tool set with painting and mixed media, while experimenting and creating new work is intoxicating. I have come to realize that my gift is my creativity and art, and I’m here to share it with the world. I have my first solo show at the Charleston Public Library in July 2024.
I continue to refine my work and brand, to reflect my unique personality & journey. As sources of inspiration, I tap into my experience growing up on a New England farm and my passion & strength as a racing sailor. On the farm, playing in the barns, I found freedom, possibility, solitude & joy. Being on the water, sailing sets my soul free and brings me alive. Incorporating early farm life and my love for sailing visually into my artwork embodies who I am— A bold, colorful creative artist, who is brave enough to follow my passion, soul and intuition to create art, with the intention of encouraging viewers to also be brave and true to themselves.
While I always knew that “being an artist” was my gift, I had no idea that my artwork would have such an effect others, in a meaningful, measurable way. I discovered that by making art, I create a dialogue and energetic transference between myself, the creator, and the observer. And every viewer’s experience is unique—yet no less meaningful. What a delight—A true gift, and my service as an artist.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
— Get out on the water, inhale the salt air and feel the breezes of the Atlantic Ocean. — Check out the local art scene & galleries in Charleston, SC.
— Ride bikes around the French Quarter, soaking in all the colors, decorative ironworks, small spaces, gardens and intimate alleyways.
— Connect with your inner soul at the Pour House Yoga on Sundays.
— Witness a stunning sunset and sunrise in the Low Country.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
1. Nicholas Wilton, Art 2 Life.
Nick has been my teacher, mentor and art guru since 2020, when I decided to pivot from being a Graphic Designer to becoming a studio Artist.
2. “ I expand in abundance, success, love and joy everyday, and encourage those around me to do the same.” — Gay Hendricks, The Big Leap
This quote resonates with me because it captures the feeling of being in ‘flow’. Engaging with others, sharing successes, ideas, opportunities and good vibes not only fills my cup, but theirs also. Generosity creates abundance, which fuels success and joy within myself, my artwork and community.
