We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisha Nesbitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Rian Harper’s Closet is an online tie dye boutique that specializes in hand made, custom color garments.
My daughter Rian and I started tie dying, as a fun activity to do as a family, to celebrate Juneteenth in 2020. At the time, she was 5 years old. We kept it going, as a creative outlet during the quarentine.
Rian really did a great job at choosing color combinations and showed an increased level of independence when we would work together on items.
I decided to use this moment as an opportunity to teach her about entrepreneurship, money management and as an opportunity to start creating generational wealth.
We launched our business on July 12, 2020 and we obtained our LLC the next month.
The support was overwhelming from our family and friends. We made it to 100 sales of handmade items within 2 months. That was major for us, since everything we did at that time was by hand and took 7-14 days to process. We now have a line of ready to ship clothing, that will allow the masses to enjoy our designs. Rian is 9 years old now and loves being her own boss.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We started out making tie dye sets out of everything. We dyed socks, t- shirts, athleisure sets, but we slowly started to receive more and more requests for collegiate and fraternity/ sorority apparel. Now we specialize in hand made, custom color garments and patches for HBCU’s and the Divine 9. We are here to make beautiful pieces, that allow us to express our creativity. We bring our customers visions to life. We do it out of love and for our culture. We value family, faith, education and legacy. Rian Harper’s Closet is a woman and family owned business, that strives to be a symbol of excellence, strength and hope in our community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are total foodies! We will definitely start by scheduling several food and sightseeing tours with unexpected ATL. Nothing is better than enjoying southern comfort food and learning about the rich history of the south.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my daughter Rian! She is the reason why the business was started and is now able to run certain aspects of the business in my absence, with very little supervision at the age of 9.
