We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
It’s natural to want to give up when starting something new, but you have to give yourself enough time to learn and continue to remind yourself of why you started. Starting a business can be an overwhelming and fun journey so it’s important to take time to slow down and care for yourself. I think if you commit to something, you should try to see it through because there was a reason you started. I knew it was time to make a change because it was something that was on mind for a long time but, I think deep down inside we all know when our heart is pulling us in a different direction. I’ve also learned not to give up when I’m upset or hungry!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always loved to shop! As a kid, I would pick out clothes for my sister and cousin, we had a girl group and we would match our outfits. I also loved to play school, but only if I could be the teacher. So, it only makes sense that my career has been in retail management because I can be in an environment that I love and focus on growth and development. Being a leader has taught me so much about myself and managing people from different backgrounds. I have become more emotionally intelligent, strategic, and learned to take risks. The most important thing is to listen to feedback so that you can support your team. There will be challenges but you have to cultivate the right mindset. My career gave me the knowledge and skills that I needed to ultimately start my own business with my mother, Girl Home Candles.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a food girlie! One of my favorites food to eat since I’ve moved down south from Philadelphia is fried green tomatoes. I’ve tried them from so many places around the city. I also love the greenways around the city. They are so peaceful and fun to explore. There are a lot of fun places to visit but I’m a homebody.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my grandparents. They were the perfect balance for each other. My grandmother
pushed me in education and paved a way for me to attend college. She taught me that if I worked hard, I could learn anything. My grandfather was supportive and encouraging. They took me in during a time when I needed them the most. They have both passed now but I still look at them as my example of who I want to be and what I want to leave as my legacy for my family.
