We had the good fortune of connecting with Troy Looper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Troy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My process was how could I make an impact to where I change the narrative to my family name and to the people of South Carolina at the same time while being true to myself as a black man in a predominately white industry. I answered the normal questions to myself for about a year what, why, where, how, and when until I came up with a realistic answer to each one of them. What am I doing? what am I going to do? What if I fail? Why am I doing this now? Where am I going to do this? How am I going to do this? How am I going to fund this? When will I walk with faith? When will it be my turn to get up in the ranks? Each question came back with the same answer it’s never on my time it’s the divines.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart in my opinion, is I do it for the people more than I do it for the monetary gain, so my heart is always in every single class that I do whether it’s one student or twenty they will get the same me.
I got to where I am today business-wise by not being comfortable and staying humble as much as possible to not lose sight of the mission bestowed upon me. I have always been told that anything that comes easy is not worth keeping, so with that being said I purposely took the road less traveled regardless of all of the denials that I encountered I kept going and still going. I overcame most challenges by keeping faith in myself and a few friends who saw that I was worth the gamble.
The greatest lesson I have learned along the way is that everyone you expect to support you will not and that a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.
I want the world to know that you can no matter what someone says or does it’s all up to how bad that you want to succeed in your goals. My brand name came from a nickname one of my favorite cousins called me “Fat Daddy”, so when he passed on his life was also my story, because he lived without limitations from anyone or anything.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My first thing would be to show how much the city of Greenville has grown since he has been gone, especially our old neighborhood of West Greenville which is not the West End. We would definitely have to go to Boda & Pipes to ash one or two over a good cup of coffee or another beverage. I would take him by Lewis Barbeque for some of that best barbeque that my tastebuds ever encountered lol. We would hang out downtown for a glimpse of the night life and how much things have changed down there. I would pick one day for work to let him see me in action from my class setting at Social House to my range skills at Sharp Shooters, then last but not least I would introduce him to my Masonic family since he has always been curious about what we do as a fraternity.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
