We had the good fortune of connecting with Toan Dao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toan, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“You got to work really really hard to make a business succeed”. There’s a difference between working smart and working hard. You don’t have to break your back to succeed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a 1st generation immigrant coming to Charleston, I had the opportunity with my family to stay local, attend school locally, and produce a local product. While it wasn’t easy, I had a great team to overcome obstacles of starting a new business. Having good core values helps ensure a steady structure towards the goals of the business. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that you have to find good, trusting people to take care of and build a steady relationship. Crafted Travel is dedicated to defining southern hospitality. When there are friends and families gathering on special occasions, we want guests to have a unique, memorable experience that will be talked about for years to come. We want the highlight of an event or weekend to include the phrase “Do you remember that time in Charleston when we….?”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them on a Crafted Travel tour – especially the Axe, Booze, and BBQ tour on a limo party bus! A beach visit at one of our 4 beaches, or Beachwalker Park in Kiawah with a stop at Rosebank Farms for the world’s best banana nut bread would also classify as the perfect day. This day trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop in Freshfields Village for exclusive shopping, and wine & charcuterie at 48 Wine Bar. We would finish with the most beautiful Charleston Sunset views at Bohicket Marina on the island.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out my wife, T. She keeps me grounded and focused, and is also very smart! We compliment each other in many ways, which has made our business successful. I answer to a higher being!
