We had the good fortune of connecting with Bert Wood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bert, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked for 2 publications prior to starting Southern Flavor and I was constantly saying to myself that I wanted to have my own publication and run it on a different level.
What should our readers know about your business?
I publish a culinary magazine in Charleston, SC area and I try to put my supporters (advertisers) first as much as possible. They drive the business. It was not easy getting it off the ground, but a lot of people got behind my desire to get it up and running and really helped spread the word. We are currently on issue number 22 and I have learned something new each time we send a magazine to the printer.
I want people to know that we are just a small food magazine in Mount Pleasant, SC and have kept up pretty well with larger publications that have 2 and 3 times the resources that we do. My team deserves a shout out in that aspect as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t want to name any specifics here because I don’t want to leave anyone out as far as advertisers go.
A weekend itinerary:
Go check out some of the history that Charleston has to offer
Grab lunch somewhere on Shem Creek with a cocktail or mocktail
Dinner at a downtown steak or seafood restaurant
Live Music somewhere in town
Breakfast on the Isle Of Palms
Go to the beach
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents and especially my Mother. I’m definitely a Mama’s Boy!
