We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Voth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been a creative person, drawn to the idea of bringing ideas to life in the here and now. My work has consistently centered around being present, interacting with others, and engaging in meaningful conversations. These interactions fuel my creativity and drive me to create experiences that resonate on a personal level.
This passion for creativity and connection naturally led me to pursue an artistic and creative career. My journey has taken me from traditional advertising and package design to UX/UI design, with each role and my love for art inspiring the creation of Southern Ruetz. I’ve always enjoyed collaborating with others to craft experiences that allow them to feel truly seen. For me, creativity isn’t just about making something beautiful; it’s about creating spaces where people can be themselves, connect with others, and feel part of something special. This desire to work in the present, combined with my love for interacting with people, drives my creative journey and shapes everything I do.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Southern Ruetz is more than just a custom hat-making business; it’s an experience centered around creativity, individuality, and connection. What sets us apart from others is our commitment to crafting unique, personalized hats that reflect the true spirit of each guest who walks through our doors. We create an environment where people feel free to express themselves, embracing their own style and personality. Our approach is rooted in art, fun, and authenticity, offering a space where everyone can relax, be themselves, and enjoy the process of creating something truly special.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built around Southern Ruetz. From bachelorette parties to offsite events, every experience is tailored to make our guests feel seen and appreciated. The feedback we receive—how relaxed and at home our customers feel here—really reinforces that we’re doing something right. It’s not just about making hats; it’s about making memories and creating moments of joy.
The journey to where we are today hasn’t been easy. Like any business, we’ve faced our share of challenges. Starting with a deep love for handmade art and hats, I quickly realized that building a business required more than just passion; it demanded resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying present and connected with the people around you. Whether it’s our customers, collaborators, or the small business community, these relationships have been crucial in overcoming obstacles and growing Southern Ruetz into what it is today.
I want the world to know that Southern Ruetz is not just a brand—it’s a story of creativity, connection, and the belief that everyone deserves to feel special. We’re here to offer more than just a product; we’re here to offer an experience that stays with you, long after you leave our space. Our journey is a testament to the power of creativity and community, and we’re excited to continue sharing it with the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friends do come and visit Charleston for a week! I make sure they experience the best this city has to offer, starting with some of the amazing local businesses we’re fortunate to have as neighbors.
First, we’d visit The Mills House, a historic hotel that perfectly captures the charm and elegance of Charleston. It’s just steps away from everything, and the service there is always top-notch stopping in at the Black Door or Iron Rose for a mimosa.
For our first meal, we’d head over to 82 Queen, a Charleston institution known for its incredible Lowcountry cuisine. Their courtyard is the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely brunch or dinner, surrounded by the city’s rich history and vibrant energy.
Shopping would be a must, and I’d take them to Boysterous, where luxury meets the laid-back Charleston vibe. It’s the ideal place to find something unique, handmade and stylish, whether it’s a statement watchband or the perfect new bag for a night out.
One of the highlights of the trip would definitely be a boat ride with Party Cat. There’s nothing like seeing Charleston from the water, and Party Cat makes it an unforgettable experience with great music, drinks, and the best views of the city’s skyline and surrounding waterways.
Mornings would start with a visit to Harken, a charming spot for coffee and treats, setting the tone for a delightful day of exploration. On one of the days we would be out at Folly Beach, enjoying the sun, and surfing.
Evenings would be spent back downtown enjoying the lively atmosphere of Henry’s, with its multiple levels offering diverse experiences and great views. We’d also explore the many rooftop bars around Southern Ruetz, soaking in the stunning views and enjoying Charleston’s vibrant nightlife.
Throughout the week, we’d explore the city’s historic streets, visit local art galleries, and take leisurely strolls through the beautiful Waterfront Park. Charleston’s charm is in its blend of culture, history, and creativity, and while there are too many wonderful places to name, The Mills House, 82 Queen, Boysterous, and Party Cat have been close to us in more ways than one. This city is all about embracing the unique experiences and warm hospitality that make every visit truly memorable.
I would say, make a hat with us at Southern Ruetz, but it’s my best friend, she already has about 4 of our hats!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, my first major inspiration came from diving deep into the podcast series How I Built This by Guy Raz. Every time I face a challenge, I turn to a new episode. There’s something incredibly powerful about hearing others share their stories—their struggles, triumphs, and the obstacles they’ve overcome. It’s not just motivational; it’s a reminder that every journey has its ups and downs, and that perseverance is key. This podcast has always fueled my fire and continues to do so, as it reinforces my belief in the power of resilience and creativity.
Beyond that, I owe a great deal of my success to the small businesses and connections I’ve made over the past three years. Sharing my love for hats, art, and crafting unique experiences with others has allowed me to build a community that is supportive, encouraging, and deeply inspiring. There are too many individuals to name, but each of them has played a role in my journey—whether it’s offering advice, sharing in the excitement of a new project, or simply cheering me on from the sidelines. Having people who believe in you and your vision is invaluable, and I’m incredibly grateful for the love and support I’ve received along the way.
