We had the good fortune of connecting with Candy Spearman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started my career as a hairstylist, I didn’t have a good work-life balance. I worked whatever hours the salon owner set, even if that meant staying at the salon without any clients. That was unproductive and disheartening. I have three children, so I needed to create a schedule that works for my family. I no longer work late evenings or weekends, and I’ve come to realize that’s perfectly fine. The clients who can visit me during my available hours are the ones who are a good fit for my services. I’m grateful to now have the flexibility to work the hours that suit my life and my family’s needs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the diverse clientele I’ve built. Many stylists tend to stick to hair that’s similar to theirs, and I was no different at first. But I pushed myself to learn about all hair types and textures, and it’s been incredibly rewarding. I’m also proud of how comfortable my clients feel with me. People often say hairstylists are like therapists, and it’s true—we have the power to make a significant impact on our clients’ lives. I love helping them believe in themselves, pursue their dreams, embrace authenticity, and love who they are. Hearing how much people enjoy talking with me is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Even after 15 years in this field, I’m still excited about the future and all the possibilities ahead. There’s so much more I want to achieve.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Greenville, South Carolina, I’d want to show them the best of what our rapidly growing city has to offer. Greenville has a vibrant downtown with a fantastic mix of restaurants, and as a music lover, I’d make sure we hit some of the best spots for live entertainment. We’d start with brunch at Juniper’s, a beautiful spot on the rooftop of a hotel that offers stunning views of the city. Then, I’d take them to Blue’s Boulevard, a jazz club that’s a personal favorite of mine. We could also check out Halls, where you can enjoy live music and great food, especially on the weekends. There’s a new venue opening soon called True Lines that promises to be incredible, bringing in lots of exciting new artists. It would be the perfect way to round out the trip and give them a true taste of what Greenville has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person who has been my greatest support throughout my journey is, without a doubt, my husband. When I was faced with the decision of whether to start my own business or find another salon to work in, he believed in me completely. He assured me that I could do it and didn’t hesitate to provide the startup money I needed. Not only did he come up with the name for my salon, but as an amazing web designer, he also built my website. He was even there to help me hang pictures and he encouraged me every step of the way. He’s my best friend, and I truly couldn’t have done it without him.
