We had the good fortune of connecting with Tameka Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tameka, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Through Evely’s Eyes is dedicated to making a significant social impact by supporting families with children who have rare medical conditions. Our mission is to empower these families through advocacy, community engagement, and specialized programs.

One of our key initiatives is the ImmUnity Play Circle, which provides inclusive play opportunities for immunocompromised children. This program not only offers a safe space for children to socialize and play but also fosters a sense of community among families facing similar health challenges. By bringing these families together, we help to alleviate feelings of isolation and provide a network of support.

Additionally, we run the Medical Mom’s Night Out program, which focuses on the mental, physical, and spiritual health of caregivers. This initiative helps to prevent caregiver burnout by offering resources, relaxation, and community building for mothers who often sacrifice their own well-being to care for their children.

Our efforts extend beyond direct support. By raising awareness about the challenges faced by families with rare medical conditions and advocating for more inclusive policies and practices, we aim to create a more understanding and supportive community. Through these programs and our ongoing advocacy work, we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of medically fragile children and their families, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Through Evely’s Eyes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families with children on rare medical journeys. Our mission is to provide resources, advocacy, and community to families navigating these challenges. What sets us apart is our holistic approach, focusing not just on the medical needs of the children, but also on the emotional and mental well-being of the entire family. We aim to create a supportive network that addresses the unique struggles of each family member, ensuring no one feels alone in their journey.

One aspect of our work that I’m most proud of is our ImmUnity Play Circle program. This initiative offers inclusive play opportunities for immunocompromised children, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Seeing the joy and relief on the faces of both children and their parents during these events is incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder of why we do what we do and the impact we’re making.

My journey to where I am today has been anything but easy. As a full-time mother of three amazing girls, including Evely who has a rare medical condition, I’ve faced numerous personal and professional challenges. Balancing caregiving with running a nonprofit has required immense dedication and resilience. There were times of doubt and exhaustion, but the support of my family, friends, and community kept me going.

Overcoming these challenges involved a lot of learning and growth. One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of asking for help and building a strong support network. No one can do it all alone, and there’s strength in seeking and accepting support from others. I’ve also learned to celebrate small victories and stay focused on the positive impact we’re making, even on tough days.

What I want the world to know about me and Through Evely’s Eyes is that our work is driven by love, compassion, and a deep understanding of the struggles faced by families with medically complex children. Our story is one of resilience and hope. We are committed to advocating for a more inclusive and supportive world where every family, regardless of their challenges, can thrive. Through Evely’s Eyes is not just an organization; it’s a movement towards kindness, acceptance, and community for all.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area, I’d make sure they had the best time ever by immersing them in the vibrant culture, delicious food, and beautiful natural scenery that Greenville has to offer. As a singer in a band myself, I have a deep love and appreciation for live music and great food, so our itinerary would reflect that passion.

We’d start by exploring downtown Greenville, indulging in Southern-style brunch at Tupelo Honey, and enjoying the charming ambiance of places like Gather Greenville. Evenings would be spent at Modern Cigar, relaxing with fine cigars and drinks, or enjoying live music at local venues.

Nature plays a big part in my life, so we’d definitely spend time at Falls Park on the Reedy, taking in the breathtaking views from the Liberty Bridge. A hike at Paris Mountain State Park followed by a visit to City Scape Winery for a wine tasting would offer a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

To delve into Greenville’s cultural scene, we’d visit the Greenville County Museum of Art and catch a performance at the Peace Center. A day trip to Asheville would add a bit of variety, with a tour of the Biltmore Estate and some time exploring the unique shops and eateries downtown.

The trip wouldn’t be complete without sampling comfort foods at places like Tasty’s Soul Food and The Herbal Farmercy. And, of course, we’d have multiple stops at Spill The Beans for their amazing coffee and ice cream.

Throughout the week, we’d connect with the vibrant community, from local musicians to the friendly faces at our favorite spots. By the end of the trip, my best friend would have a deep appreciation for Greenville’s beauty, culture, and the wonderful people who make it such a special place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate this shoutout to my three amazing daughters, Luna, Evely and Skye. They inspire me every day with their resilience, strength, and love. Their presence in my life is a constant reminder of why I do what I do.

I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to my family and friends who have stood by us during our darkest times. Their unwavering support, love, and encouragement have been invaluable. They have been my rock, providing both emotional and practical support when it was needed the most.

Additionally, I want to honor our angels and ancestors. Their guidance and spiritual presence have been a source of strength and inspiration. They have paved the way for us, and I feel their love and protection every step of the way.

Finally, a special shoutout to the amazing community that has rallied around Through Evely’s Eyes. From the volunteers to the donors, and everyone who has believed in our mission, your support has made all the difference. Thank you for helping us make a positive impact on the lives of so many families.
