We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Doerr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The biggest misconception surrounds energy expenditure and caloric intake. Much of my business is focused on weight loss but truly, I try to educate on fat loss. Weight loss includes more than just losing fat. It includes muscle loss, and we are already losing about 3-8% every decade starting in our thirties. Muscle has a “use it or lose it” principle. We find as we enter our thirties life changes drastically with careers and family. Often it leads to us becoming more sedentary. There are a multitude of benefits to strength training besides just enhanced strength and physical performance. Many of the other benefits include improved metabolism, better bone health, a reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved insulin sensitivity, enhanced joint support and stability, better posture and pain reduction, faster recovery from illnesses, injuries and even surgeries and improved cardiovascular benefits. However, the two most prominent reasons people start to strength train are for body composition and mental health. We all want to look good and feel good.
Everyone often believes they can outpace their daily caloric intake and it’s impossible. Often foods that are healthy are not always the best choice during a fat loss season. There is strategy involved for a body re-composition. When you combine strength training with a balanced diet and adequate rest your life will start trending in a positive direction. My job is to act as a guide, to educate and help others create a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. What you achieve in the gym has real life applications and it far exceeds aesthetics. Aesthetics is usually just the first motivator.

What should our readers know about your business?
Originally, this started out as a personal gym. We moved to the Columbia area in August ‘23 because my husband began a new job position and just a month prior, we had the birth of our baby, Lydia. It became quickly obvious that with him only having 4 hours in the evening, plus a new baby, it would be hard for me to find the gym time that I needed to achieve my fitness goals. I also had another dream of my daughter watching her mother “do hard things”. I wanted her to be a part of my journey. After all the chaos of having a baby, immediately listing our Georgia home, living in temporary housing, and finally closing on one home to completing the sale of our current home, I never once thought of starting my own business. I knew I would keep my certifications and continuing education going but figured this was a season of motherhood.
As I became more involved with meeting locals and getting to know people at church (Village Church), in my neighborhood and conversations with others while out shopping, the feedback I consistently received was that there was a need in the community not only for fitness training but nutrition coaching. I am very passionate about what I do, and I realized that even if it was just one person I could help, that one person was worth opening my gym up for. My dream began to expand from ensuring my family had a healthy fitness future to wanting to share the same healthy future with others. From here, I decided I wanted to help beginners get their fitness and nutrition start in a space that was private to help them build confidence so that whenever their training is done with me, they can walk into any commercial gym fully prepared. What really sets me a part is that you are not just my 3 o’clock appointment, you are someone I work closely with. I don’t just throw you on what equipment is available, I curate your fitness experience to your needs and help you progress to your desired goals. I provide my clients with their workout routines so when they feel confident enough to go out on their own, they have a reference point.
The most push back I get in this industry is around nutrition. Many people struggle with emotional attachment to food and are very defensive about the topic. I usually start my clients on their nutrition journey with the mindset of having childlike curiosity. My biggest hurdle personally is taking my business into an online space and cultivating content for what my clients or audience would need. I have social media that acts like a portfolio of sorts, but I truly want to develop more content around nutrition to help individuals with tracking. Like all entrepreneurs, we do everything. I am on the journey of becoming many things beyond a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have not lived here for a year yet, so we are still explorers ourselves. I have come to enjoy the zoo thanks to the first friend I made here inviting our family for an outing. I like walking the zoo and then crossing the bridge to go to the botanical garden. The whole city is beautiful, and we love the slow life. Everywhere we go the people are so friendly and that speaks volumes about the area. If it is a Saturday, I would take my “best friend” to paint at the Lighthouse Cafe in Lake Carolina with my friend Nastaran who teaches the class. Or maybe a visit to Laura’s Tea Room! That was a fun experience especially since we can dress up! If it is Sunday, I want my “best friend” to come to Village Church with me. From the moment we walked in the door we knew we were home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is to my amazing husband. I am beyond grateful for all that he does for our family but the love and support he provides me with is unmatched.
I would also like to shoutout to my Village Church family and say thank you for being a home to us. I prayed for two years for women I can do life with, and I am so grateful to have so many women supporting my journey with Christ and in life and business.
The truth is Jesus Christ saved my life from being a broken alcoholic and restored my life. I am blessed beyond measure because of Christ and the joy I am experiencing walking with the Lord so closely feels like Heaven on Earth. I never dreamed every day could be so beautiful, peaceful and joyful. God makes all things possible!
