We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Giles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
For me, taking a risk usually means you are going against what the facts say to follow your gut. Which means it is an emotional act. Understanding this has helped me when making risky decisions while running my business and in life. I ask myself, am I taking this fight because it is worth the battle or because I am upset? Turning away from risks taken in defiance or anger has helped me and my business avoid stresses as we have both grown over the years. On the same note, taking the risks that had a positive reasoning usually works in our favor and we have fun while doing it!

Honest Appraisals and Realistic Expectations
It’s not uncommon for marketing companies to, shall we say, make exaggerated promises. However, at Cut Throat Marketing we try to do things differently and will tell a client if we think a goal is untenable.
Our team is closely knit, with the company stakeholders serving on the front lines alongside our SEO experts, copywriters, and web designers. When we tell you a marketing goal is feasible, you’re hearing it from our company’s owners and the marketing specialists who are going to be responsible for making it happen.
We have a reputation for success and we intend on keeping it! We don’t make promises we can’t keep and we approach every new project with the same vigor that has won us awards in the past.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I would start with coffee and a donut from Bart’s Crazy Good Coffee here in Irmo! The CinnAYumm is my favorite! Then I would take a walk around the Harbison State Forest show them what the local wildlife is like and work up an appetite. Next we would cross the dam into Lexington to go eat some ramen at Hokkaido Ramen House. Then we would walk the local stores and see if we can find a good COCK’s t-shirt. Maybe a quick walk across the dam to burn off all the food and sweets. With dinner at Cola’s or COA in downtown Columbia. The next day would be spent on Lake Murray renting a boat via Lazy Waves Pontoon Rentals and Water Sports. Take out some chicken salad from Costco and some cold beverages from Greens, and that is a great day!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce or the Fun Chamber has been with me since day one of starting Cut Throat Marketing. This amazing group of people all understand what it is like to be in business, run a business and still have a life. Their events, like the Tuesday morning Coffee Talk is a great place to ask the kinds of questions you have to other business owners and hear how they all answer. It’s free, just need a business card to get a cup of Bart’s Crazy Good Coffee!
