We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Edward Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Edward, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Throughout my career, the most important decision I’ve consistently made has been to embrace the present moment while actively cultivating a vision for the future. This approach fuels a strong internal drive to excel in my current role. I take advantage of professional development and other educational opportunities to continuously equip myself for the next step. By focusing on delivering exceptional results today, I’ve consistently built a strong reputation, data-driven success stories, and valuable relationships. These elements have been key in seizing new opportunities when they arise.
In contrast, I’ve observed colleagues who constantly chase the next thing, often missing the value and learning opportunities within their current role. This can lead to them feeling overwhelmed and underprepared for future advancements.
My experience has demonstrated the power of this balanced approach – a relentless focus on present excellence coupled with a clear vision for the future. This philosophy is a cornerstone of OnTrack Greenville & BOLD’s leadership. It allows us to be adaptable and responsive to current community needs while steadily progressing towards our long-term goals.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My entire career has been dedicated to empowering students in underserved communities. From my early days as a recognized middle school teacher to my current roles as Executive Director of OnTrack Greenville, a program designed to propel students towards graduation and college success, and as BOLD Leadership co-founder, I’ve always strived to make a difference.
Leading schools and now two non-profits has been a journey of continuous learning. Each role, whether as a teacher, district-level coach, assistant principal, or principal, has offered invaluable lessons. I’ve learned from my mistakes, adapting and growing with each experience. But most importantly, I’ve learned to hold onto myself and my values. Confidence and humility are a delicate balance, and I’ve strived for both. Kindness and compassion are at the core of my leadership style, because genuine connection is essential. Building strong relationships can be tough, but the rewards are immeasurable.
Beyond academics, I’m deeply invested in social justice. That’s why I co-founded the BOLD Leadership Network. This organization tackles the underrepresentation of Black educators, while also fostering psychological safety and a spirit of community service within marginalized groups. My involvement extends to other organizations that champion children and education, particularly for African American students.
I hold a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Technology, but my greatest support system comes from my family and friends. They keep me grounded as I navigate the ever-changing world of education and community leadership. It’s an honor to serve alongside dedicated partners.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start with breakfast at Staxx Omega; followed by a walk downtown Greenville over Falls park on the Reedy. Prior to lunch, I would take them on a bike ride from downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest, stopping at Swamp Rabbit Brewery for a beer; and when we return; stop at Gather Greenville for lunch. After lunch, we could chill at either Rabbit Hole around the fire pit or up on the roof of Ink n’ Ivy. Later in the afternoon, we could either hang out at Vibez Bar and Lounge or head to Asheville on a scenic ride and then downtown Asheville for a nice dinner and fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My path to success and leadership wouldn’t be the same without the incredible support of several individuals. My mother’s unwavering support and sacrifices equipped me with the tools I needed to thrive. My educators challenged me, recognizing my potential and fostering my growth. My family, including my children, embodies the village concept, providing a constant source of love and support. My brothers at the BOLD Leadership Network helped me discover my true identity and the importance of psychological safety in personal development. Finally, my close circle – those who offer prayers, encouragement, and accountability – keeps me grounded and motivated.
