We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. JaQuinda Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. JaQuinda, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As a psycho therapist that treats trauma in athletes and non athletes, I strive to normalizes conversations around mental wellness and mental illness. My goal is to create safe brave spaces for people to be seen and heard where we work through their identified trauma in order for them to heal and live their desired life. Rather than run from uncomfortable conversations, we address them head on. Healing is a beautiful journey.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I decided to start my business when I realized that there was a lack of Black therapist in my area. I also understood the importance of healing from trauma in order to walk in your purpose. Opening up my own practice came with a lot of learning and growing. I believe what helped my practice grow organically was that I was authentic and everyone that I came in contact with I wanted to let them know that I see them and I hear them. I am honored that people choose me as their therapist and I will never take that for granted.
To be honest, what I learned from my journey of growing my business was to keep the main thing, the main thing. My goal was I wanted to help people heal from their trauma and I never lost focus of that at all. I am a learner by nature and reading is something I do every single day, it allows me to stay fresh in regard to learning new interventions as well as staying current on research and findings. I will never loose focus of why I wake up and get to do what I love, I tell my clients all the time I was chosen to be a vessel for their healing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is easy, I am a foodie by heart and I love to hang out and chill locally. I live in one of the best places with some of the best people. Food- Asian Pacific Market, Lewis bbq, Golden llama, Carolina fine foods for breakfast that Saturday morning, Nashville Hot Chicken Place, and Ojays
Visit roper mountain, a Greenville Drive game, Falls Park, you have to walk or bike the Swamp Rabbit Trail, fishing at Tall Pines Park, gun range at Palmetto State Armory and drinks at Gather Greenville
If school is in, during the Fall we would catch a Friday Night football game or if it’s Spring we would catch a basketball game at my old high school, Hillcrest High (Let’s go RAMS!!!)
And we would end the week, by attending worship at The Purpose Place located in Spartanburg, SC
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my amazing husband Gavin Jackson and our two boys Ellis and Rowan. This career found me, I changed my major 6 times (yes 6 times). I fell in love with a sociology class which pushed me to get my masters in Community Counseling and my doctorate in Counseling Psychology. I read the book, The Deepest Well by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and it shifted how I went about my work and the importance of social determinants when treating an individual. Rather then just go off of behaviors and symptoms alone, I really work on getting to know my clients before we ever talk about a diagnosis
