Meet Colette Mendelson | Creative Artist, Florist and Crafter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Colette Mendelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colette, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have worked in several different industries but nothing brings me the joy that creating something does. I love to create in all types of mediums and am always seeking to create something unique. I figured why not make money in something that I truly love to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I have always been creative and have been asked for years to help friends coordinate and/or decorate their homes.

During the pandemic is when I allowed myself to really tap into this side of myself. I started with nursery animal paintings, went to florals and then started to try all the various techniques associated with pour painting. I loved the abstract and flow with that style. It can also be controlled to have a more refined outcome. I thoroughly enjoyed mastering this technique and it took time and a lot of practice.

After the pandemic I decided I wanted to do something to support mental health so I partnered with a professional florist and created a flower line just to support local nonprofits. I was then trained by that florist so I gained a new skill.
That skill helped to translate from fresh florals to silk, dried as well as crafting wreaths. All of which I still do today.

I started selling at a local farmers market and that ended up bringing dog paintings to the forefront. A person saw my painted nursery animals and asked if I could paint their dog. That ended up being my first custom dog painting order and simultaneously also my second as another person overheard the conversation and then ordered one also. They were thrilled with the end results and now that is a specialty of mine.

I also just partnered with a woodworker to design unique door/wall pieces that I paint.

I LOVE to create unique items. With my florals I mix modern and vintage vessels so   my florals are not in a traditional clear glass vase.
I love to change up what I do and constantly look to expand all my techniques. Mixing and creating new things gives me energy and makes my happy.

My pieces are happy and I want to bring joy with everything I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have only lived in Greenville just over a year but these are my fav’s. Of course you have to bring her to The Falls, it is so pretty and unique to Greenville. Walking around the

Grand Bohemian Lodge which is near The Falls is a must see.
I also love the Swamp Rabbit grocery/cafe for a true hometown feel. I love Revival Butchery, you won’t find a nicer staff to assist you for your meat needs.
Hotel Hartness grounds are very pretty and I love The 05 restaurant there, I had an awesome salmon dish there!

Jasmine Kitchen would be a stop as I worked with a sex trafficking non profit in IL for seven years and the fact that the restaurant is staffed and is to benefit women who have been trafficked is near and dear to my heart.

I also like to visit Travelers Rest as there are a lot of great restaurants there and its a cute small town. One of my favorite restaurants, Restaurant 17 is there.

I also love the campus of Furman, it is lovely for a nice walk around the lake.
People here in Greenville are very friendly in comparison to other places I have lived, anyone is sure to notice that!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shout-out to my husband, Steve. He has been patient with my various creative endeavors over the course of our marriage and also recognized that I needed a designated space to create.
