We had the good fortune of connecting with Hayden Gregg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hayden, what principle do you value most?
For my business and personal life I think treating others the way you want to be treated is the most important principle to keep in mind. With work, I’m a home owner too, I don’t want to be lied to by a contractor, or given unrealistic timelines, or have a bunch of hidden costs that weren’t discussed up front so I always try to be honest and clear with my clients. Also, in regards to the quality of the work, if it wouldn’t go in my house it’s not acceptable for a clients home.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Growing a business as a decorative painter has been a ton of work. The projects are always different and present all sorts of challenges like painting ceilings, continuing a floor pattern under built in cabinetry, painting in tight corners, and all sorts of other fun challenges. So being able to adapt and think on your feet is a huge skill you need to be a decorative painter and something I have had to work on during my career.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Atlanta. I’m boring so most of my time is spent working or antiquing. There’s tons of good stores here, Peachtree Battle Antiques (they do great estate sales too if you’ve ever wanted to stand in line at 8am on a Saturday morning and snoop through someone’s house I highly recommend), Interiors Market, Melange, Erika Reade, to name a few. Scotts Antique Market is a once a month event that’s full of treasures. For restaurants I’ve been eating at Yeppa a lot, it’s a great pizza place with a fun vibe. I always love La Grotta for dinner, or Highland Tap. For a more casual spot George’s or Manuel’s.
If a friend is coming to visit we’d have to go over to Decatur for a day and eat at Pastries A Go Go for brunch, do some shopping in the square, grab a drink at Brickstore, and dinner at Cafe Alsace
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m a member of an organization called the Decorative Arts Trust. They really helped me learn to appreciate fine craftsmanship and opened my eyes to all the different areas of decorative arts. They put on conferences, study abroad trips, work shops, and publish a really great magazine on what’s happening in the world of decorative arts.
