We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Dawn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business stemmed from my time as an Author. Publishing is an expensive undertaking and I found that there was a lack of affordable design services for Authors. I wanted to give back to the book community by helping those who couldn’t afford expensive design services by offering high quality for next to nothing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey into design began in 2015 when I decided to teach myself how to design my own book covers. The goal was to save money on publishing my own books. I quickly found out that I loved design. When I design, it feels like home, and we all love to feel at home in whatever we do. At the time, I didn’t have the money to purchase the programs I needed, so I searched my house for any loose change I could find. Once I found the $100 I needed, I drove to the bank, deposited the change and returned home. The learning process wasn’t easy and truthfully, I wanted to quit so many times. I’m not trained, and I don’t have a degree hanging on my wall for graphic design. Those facts caused me to doubt myself daily and pose the question, “am I good enough?”. I still have those doubts to this day, but I think that’s a normal human behavior in anything we do. I finally realized that not having a degree or formal training was an advantage. I don’t have rules or lessons for my design process. I design without limits or inhibitions, which set me apart. I’m not afraid to try things that some deem “crazy” because sometimes crazy is the best approach. My clients know that when they come to me, they are going to get something out of the box and original. The one thing I want the world to know about my story is, if you want something bad enough, you’ll make it happen…even if that means digging in the sofa for loose change.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would first give them a tour of the family farm I live on. There’s so much history in this land and I’m a huge history buff/nerd. There’s not much to do around here since it’s a small town (we literally have a post office and that’s it), so I’d likely take them across the river to Missouri to shop and hang out. All of this is dependent on if they want to visit me or not because I also have over 200 Ball Python snakes in my house. I don’t get many visitors because of that fact.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give credit to all of those who have supported me over the years. My clients are the heartbeat of my business, and they deserve to be recognized.
