We had the good fortune of connecting with Marisa Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to create a space for clients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, clients that looked like me, and clients that had some realization of how depression can have you seeing your body in the worse way possible. I always thought it was about financial freedom, being my own boss, and creating my own schedule but, it was more than that. I’ve been in my client’s shoes where I absolutely hated my body, my body hair, especially facial hair, and how fast it would grow. I had no desire for a space where clients felt I just went to school, read a textbook and passed a test when in fact I am living the same day to day issues they experience. I love what I am creating; my goal is to continue to do so.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Black Widow Studio apart from others entities is living with PCOS myself. At times, l’ve experienced embarrassing moments of shaving my face first thing in the morning and having stubble by 4pm that same day. I’ve spent a lot of time researching how to combat those pesky hairs.  The amount of times I’ve had to experience trial and error with different companies just to find the perfect wax to make myself and my clients happy was well worth it. Through that effort I see the results and so do my clients. I try my best to recommend products that are budget friendly. I never want clients to feel like self care is something that has to be expensive and/or something they should have to cut from their lives. And trust me, product research is not easy especially when everyone’s skin and hormones are completely different.  However it was a challenge I was more than happy to take on, and I will continue to help females become comfortable in their skin. I want the world to know with or without facial hair you are perfect beyond what the natural eye can see. Beauty is both internal and external. At Black Widow Studio one of my goals is to help clients tap into both.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am thankful for my parents, my husband, and my friends who whole heartedly supported a random decision on a Tuesday night. My district manager at Cycle Gear who supported my decision to step down to go to school and eventually start a business. Everyone in my life has played a huge part in my success and honestly I am grateful beyond words.
