We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Rappleye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jon, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
“I often reflect that Art found me, rather than me actively choosing to become an artist. The pull towards creative expression seemed almost instinctual; I couldn’t help but create, fueled by a love for working with my hands. One vivid memory stands out from my childhood: sneaking into my father’s industrial car paint supplies and adorning the backside of his auto body paint shop with my murals. My parents recognized my innate passion for crafting and promptly enrolled me in drawing and painting classes at a young age.

Embarking on an artistic or creative career feels like a seamless continuation of my essence. It provides me with a medium to express myself in ways that are both distinctive and profound. Creativity acts as my guiding force, propelling me to explore uncharted territories, challenge conventional norms, and continually innovate. I derive immense satisfaction from the process of transforming raw materials into something meaningful and impactful.

Ultimately, this journey enables me to forge connections with others on a profound level, stirring emotions, and contributing to the cultural and societal tapestry.”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
“My art serves as a window into my innermost thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It’s fascinating to see how my current work circles back to themes I explored many years ago, demonstrating the cyclical nature of creativity and relevance.

Each piece I create embodies my perspective and carries a deeply personal narrative. I take pride in my ability to evoke raw emotions and ignite meaningful conversations through my art.

My journey to where I am today professionally has sometimes been filled with challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. However, each obstacle has been an opportunity for growth and learning. I’ve learned to embrace failure as a stepping stone toward success and to persevere even when the path ahead seems daunting.

The support of my community, mentors, and loved ones has been instrumental in my journey. Their encouragement and belief in my talent have fueled my determination to pursue my passion relentlessly.

Through it all, I’ve learned valuable lessons about resilience, patience, and the importance of staying true to oneself. I’ve come to understand that success is not defined by external validation but by the fulfillment found in pursuing one’s passion authentically.

What I want the world to know about me and my art is that it’s more than just a visual expression; it’s a reflection of the human experience. My hope is that my work resonates with others on a deep and meaningful level, sparking introspection, empathy, and connection. My story is one of perseverance, passion, and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of art.” and the deeply personal narrative woven into each piece. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Laurel, Mississippi, is renowned for its charming television show “Home Town,” in which my partner Ramon and I were featured. Nestled in this quaint town is a treasure trove of Southern hospitality and allure. Downtown Laurel boasts a myriad of delightful shops, including the Laurel Mercantile, owned and operated by Erin Napier, one of the show’s stars. Erin’s candle emporium, The Scent Library, exudes an old-world charm with its wooden decor and plush Chesterfield sofas.

Adjacent to Erin’s establishment is Scotsman General, curated by her husband, Ben Napier, offering a diverse array of handcrafted goods, from breadboards to Ben’s signature coffee blends and apparel. Across the street, a food yard features an array of options from various food trucks.

Antique enthusiasts will revel in exploring Peddlers Junction or the Rusty Chandelier, where hidden treasures await discovery. For a great dining experience, The Loft reigns supreme, offering a geat menu in an inviting ambiance. Meanwhile, Lee’s Coffee Shop is a haven for coffee aficionados, while Pearl’s Diner is celebrated for its fried chicken, a favorite among tourists.

For those seeking entertainment and libations, 320 boasts a lively atmosphere and a charming patio where patrons can enjoy food and live music performances. Alternatively, Buzzard’s Roost offers a laid-back setting and unique fare, while Grits and Some is the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast.

Laurel is a haven for culinary delights, eclectic shopping, and vibrant entertainment, ensuring visitors experience the epitome of Southern hospitality and charm.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been nurtured by a rich community of both talented artists and passionate supporters of the arts. As a full-time artist, having a network of like-minded individuals is invaluable. I’ve been blessed to receive numerous grants, support, and accolades from within the art community, all of which have propelled me forward in what can often be a fiercely competitive field.

Throughout my journey, I’ve had the privilege of learning from many exceptional art instructors. Their ability to recognize something unique and special in me served as a constant inspiration. Their guidance and mentorship have played a pivotal role in shaping my artistic identity and fueling my creative pursuits.”
