We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalin Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalin, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
A Maintaining a healthy work-life balance at the age of 15 is quite the juggling act, but I’ve found a rhythm that works for me. With the demands of high school taking precedence, I’ve learned to prioritize my commitments—school, Jphotos, then personal life. It’s a structured approach that ensures I meet my academic responsibilities while pursuing my passion for photography. In my spare time, I often find myself engrossed in Jphotos-related tasks. Once I start a project, the drive to complete it propels me to tackle additional smaller tasks. It’s a cascading effect where accomplishment fuels motivation. Despite the challenges, I’ve managed to strike a balance. Still, it does get intricate when you’re navigating the responsibilities of running a business, excelling in high school, and still finding quality time for my family. It’s a constant learning curve, but I embrace the opportunity to grow academically and professionally while cherishing moments with my loved ones.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At 15, being a wedding photographer sets me apart, defying the conventional narrative of teenagers. While some may be engrossed in video games, I’ve dedicated myself to capturing timeless moments. What distinguishes Jphotos is our signature look—dark and moody—ensuring a consistent aesthetic that clients can trust for a cohesive visual narrative. Embracing the philosophy that quality always surpasses quantity, clients can rely on Jphotos not only for a distinctive style but also for images that resonate with enduring excellence. Recognizing my strengths has been pivotal; clients can trust that Jphotos excels in wedding photography, producing images that transcend time. From the initial challenges of my first wedding shoot in 2021, where I learned the importance of equipment and honed my identity as a photographer, to the success of being booked almost every other week from mini sessions, portraits to event photo sessions; the journey has been transformative. Overcoming challenges taught me the value of taking breaks when things get tough, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself. In essence, Jphotos specializes in wedding and event photography, offering a unique and enduring dark and moody editing style, a testament to the dedication and passion behind the lens.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’re starting with a Southern breakfast at Maple Street Biscuit Company, then diving into the Greenville Zoo and biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Days are packed with exploring the Upcountry History Museum, shopping on Main Street, and enjoying dinner spots like Husk and Passerelle Bistro. Midweek, we’re taking a scenic drive to Table Rock State Park for some nature vibes and winding down at the Swamp Rabbit Inn. Day 5 is all about local flavors, with a culinary tour and dinner at Gringo’s Cantina. Live entertainment at the Peace Center on Day 6, followed by Soby’s for dinner. We are wrapping it all up with a brunch at Tupelo Honey Café, exploring farmers’ markets, hitting Roper Mountain Science Center, and ending the week with a lively dinner at Nose Dive.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to express my gratitude to my family, particularly my mom, whose distinct mindset has given me alternative perspectives on various situations. She has played a pivotal role in the behind-the-scenes aspects of Jphotos, handling emails, assisting with pricing, offering encouragement, and supporting me in dealing with clients and social media management. A big shoutout to my incredible clientele, who entrusted a photographer as young as 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 years old to showcase my skills. I’m immensely thankful for that opportunity. Special thanks to my mentor, Smitha Lee, who has been instrumental in guiding my growth in the photography industry. Learning from someone I admire has been invaluable. Mr. Lee has taught me the intricacies of advancing in photography and helped me refine the distinctive style of Jphotos. His inspiration has been a driving force, and I’m genuinely grateful for his guidance.
