We had the good fortune of connecting with Louise Sturcken and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Louise, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Keep Swimming. Keep asking for help along the way. Keep sharing your vision a day at a time. If you remember in a prior interview I wanted to relocate to Charleston. I had no idea how it was going to happen. I applied at Minnow and was working a tradeshow in NYC called Playtime. I thought let me leave the booth and go look for Minnow and put in some face time. Just as I was about to leave the booth a lovely woman from Charleston popped in to check out the brand I was representing Louise Mischa. Her name was Anna Shuford I didn’t know that at the time. We connected over children fashion and the tradeshow and then I mentioned to her how I wanted to relocate back to Charleston where she was from and that I was just about to step out to find the brand I wanted to work for. She said “that’s my best friend” I will text her right now. This is an example of “is it odd or is it God”. Our job is to ask and pray for what we want to make our vision come true and the rest is handled by the universe. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you never give up. You persist. You continue to take the next right action. If you think positive and share love with people you meet, your connections along the way will guide your progress. Connections and relationships with others are life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My Career started in NYC after I graduated from the College of Charleston and lived abroad in Argentina for 6 months. I had just moved to NY with a degree in Arts Management and was waiting tables. I was invited to a party and I went and the person there asked what I wanted to do in NYC and I blurted out “Work in Fashion” he said ” oh you have to meet Greg Armas” the rest is history. JK. Assembly New York was my first fashion job and we tripled the space and income of the store during my time there under Greg’s leadership. There are many Challenges in life in general especially with work. I guess if you need help ask for guidance would be my biggest piece of advice.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say let’s go surfing first and foremost at Sullivans Island or Folly beach. Then I would suggest that we go to Fast and French for lunch and perhaps Basic Kitchen for Dinner. My favorite thing to do in Charleston is walk and I really love Hampden Park so that would be on the list. For shopping we would hit all the thrifts duh then Hampden, Loeffler Randal, and Minnow. I also love babbas on cannon and Harken. I’d also love to get them on a boat to the light house at low tide it’s pure magic.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to Morgan Smith for trusting me to be her Minnow Swim Flagship Manager for her first permanent store location 145 King Street Suite 120. She is the kindest, most creative, female owned business leader. Did I mention she has 3 kids and managers to travel and run a thriving business. I feel really blessed to work for Minnow Swim whose motto is “Sunshine Awaits” the branding hits very close to come as the ocean, children and travel bring me much joy. She’s designed a very accessible line for 0-6 months up 13-14 swim, pj, and knits with Adult sizing in the same XS-Xl. Anna Shufford also deserves a shout out. Women supporting women 🙂
