We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill, how do you think about risk?
Risk means to me, that you are responsible for any damage, loss, or difficulty to anything that you invest your time and/or money in. I knew starting my business that it would be difficult and each time, a door was shut in my face, it only pushed me more to succeed. Through continuous efforts, I was able to secure lines of credit to get my business off the ground. At the end of the day, I’m thankful for the opportunities to learn to navigate other ways to pursue your passion and business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my beauty career during my senior year in high school. When I graduated, I earned my nail technician’s license. Immediately I entered into the salon industry. I worked as a nail technician for 5 years and then decided to go back to school to become an esthetician. During that time, I was able to take a class to learn how to apply eyelash extensions which little did I know, would change my life and career goals forever. I worked my way up to becoming certified and then became an educator for the eyelash extension company that I was trained with. I traveled around teaching beauty professionals how to apply eyelash extensions for almost 2 years. This opportunity helped me fine tune my public speaking skills along with teaching and coaching future lash professionals entering the industry. Learning to apply eyelash extensions was not easy at all. Between mastering using tweezers in both hands, I had to sharpen my skills in consultations, communication and problem solving. I had days when I would drive home crying, feeling defeated that I couldn’t do this job and I was a failure. Then other days, my clients would come in and rave about how great of a job I’ve done and give me such a boost of confidence. This would reaffirm that I was in the right career and that it takes pushing through the tough times to feel so accomplished with your work. I set myself apart from others in my field by continuing to stay update on the latest trends and techniques. I believe if you are not constantly developing your skills as the industry evolves, you get left behind in the dust. My goal each day is to be present for my clients and employees, overcome obstacles and always be growing.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Because I am a foodie at heart, I would have to take friends to my favorite restaurants and breweries. My favorite steakhouse is Halls Chophouse. The customer service and quality is unbeatable. Next, it would have to be Edmond’s Oast Brewing Company, it’s a great place to try locally brewed beer and yummy snacks. The best seafood restaurant is hands down, 167 Raw Bar. Not only do they have the freshest oysters, but the most amazing tuna burger in town. I would definitely recommend also going on an iconic ghost walk tour especially to the Old City Jail. It will not disappoint, The final destination that is my absolute favorite is the Shem Creek area. The restaurants are all located on the water so you can enjoy drinks and food while watching the boats go by and dolphins swimming through the creek.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout out to my mother, she has been my biggest fan, my shoulder to cry on during tough times and my rock. She keeps me level headed and pushing forward no matter what. She has put her dedication and heart into every career she adds to her resume. She was a nurse for 10 years, then joined the Navy and retired after 20 years. She then helped provide administrative and onboarding support for a commercial diving school for another 13 years. She is the most driven, hard working person in the room! She taught me to make effort everyday to stay positive and to not give up on your goals.
