We had the good fortune of connecting with Isis Spann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isis, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
One of the most important things that I have done for my children is to always be honest with them. I have seen how holding the truth from a child can do more harm than good. I pride myself on always being truthful with my children even if it may hurt them or cause them to have questions. I am teaching my children to honor and expect honesty not just from me but from everyone.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am currently the lead consultant of FUNdamentals of Learning and executive director of A Home For School. Both of these businesses focus on education and engagement. We are not just on a mission to teach the children and families of today but our business is generational, I pray that my children, their children, and their great-grandchildren are literate and academically confident. It has not been an easy road ahead of me but I am needed in this space. Families need to know that someone believes in them and their children. I started as a classroom teacher but it was not enough for me to be in the four walls of a school or the individual walls of a school system. I continue to overcome the challenges but teaching and focusing on the people who depend on me. I want the world to know that I stand on the shoulders of Septima P. Clark, Dr. Maya Angelou, Daisy Bates and so many powerful black women who wanted the best for children.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give my husband Terry Jerome Spann, Jr. his flowers. I am able to live my dreams and live out my passions because he supports and believes in me. He encourages me never to quit and always reminds me of how far I have come and how much farther I have to go.
