We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmir Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmir, how do you think about risk?
No one likes hearing about or discussing risks, however, without them, no one would be driven to leave their comfort zone. Risks play a major role in my everyday life. I risked quitting a regular job to start my business. I also took the risk of going off to college in another state to achieve my bachelor’s degree. Those decisions not only made me leave my comfort zone but they made me into a stronger woman. I’ve learned that it is okay to do it alone, scared, and broke. Those moments of taking risks were just stepping stones to get where I’m meant to be.

What should our readers know about your business?
Barb Life is a brand I created at 17 with the intent to encourage women to embrace their femininity and beauty. As a woman, I know that there are days when I may feel less than. And when those days come I treat myself to some form of self-care (shopping, solo date, hair, nails, etc.) to cheer myself up. Doing hair started off as a hustle but I grew to love it once I realized what impact I had on my clients. I began to create bonds with my clients and appointments became safe spaces for the both of us. I then decided to take my hair career seriously by elevating Barb Life into an actual business that provides quality services and a comforting experience. Over the years I continuously invested in my brand while working part-time and going to school. Somedays I would become discouraged and on others, I felt that things were finally going great. But I always remained mild and kept my faith in God and my business. Over time, I’ve learned a lot about how the industry works especially during the seasons. The economy also plays a role in the service industry alongside social media. What is most important for anyone to know about Barb Life is that it is not just a brand but a lifestyle. Every woman is a life-sized doll and we come from many backgrounds and in many shapes and sizes. We’re all beautiful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area for a week I would first take them to have brunch at Famous Toastry in Carolina Forest and then head to the state park to enjoy the water. A day at the boardwalk would be my second place to hang out. We would definitely check out the arcade and grab a bite to eat at Tiki Bar & Grill. I love their fried calamari and the cocktails are great. The third place I would take them would be the Duplin Winery in North Myrtle Beach and have dinner at Greg Norman afterward. The fourth place would be the Grand Prix and then enjoy some pizza from Mellow Mushroom. I love their pizza. The fifth day would include going to the Aquarium and exploring Broadway. We could always eat and play games at Dave and Buster’s or enjoy a meal and drinks at one of their various restaurants. On the last day, we would enjoy some shopping at Coastal Grand and Tanger and get some massages at Massage Envy near Surfside.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out my mom and grandparents. They have always encouraged me to follow my heart and dreams. They have always shown me unconditional love and support and I cannot thank them enough for that. Without them, I would not be the woman I am today. I owe them the world and more.
