We had the good fortune of connecting with Ra’Jonna McMillan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ra’Jonna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There were several factors that contributed to my thought process behind getting my businesses started. Back in 2018 when I made the decision to get my businesses started, I had just moved back home and I felt like I was completely starting life over from scratch & rebuilding. I had enrolled in school (which I was solely putting myself through school at the time), and that can be very expensive. I was also working multiple jobs to try to make ends meet, but it just wasn’t enough. I wasn’t making a decent wage to satisfy living expenses, in addition to trying to finish up college. I got my businesses started, because I had a need for financial freedom and I needed to make more money to cover everything that I had going on in my life at the time. Making a decision to go into business for myself seemed like the only way I could make the money that I needed, especially since I didn’t have a degree or experience in my field of study at the time. Being able to live better financially and finish school was the primary driving force behind my thought process of getting my businesses started, but as I began to accomplish these things, my “why” started to change. Yes, I wanted to accomplish this, but I also thought about the legacy that would come after me. I never want my family to be in a position of feeling like they don’t have enough…money, time, resources, anything. As I continue in my entrepreneurial journey, that has been my driving force & thought process for starting my own businesses. I want to leave a legacy for my family and I never want them to feel or experience any kind of lack in any capacity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the things I am most proud of and I believe sets my businesses apart from others is, I strive to build genuine relationships and create experiences. It is deeper than just having transactional exchanges, but I’ve experienced the bulk of my success by having strong relationships with clients and business partners that I get to work with. In the beginning, relationship building was something that I struggled with. The main reason I struggled so much with building relationships is because I lean more towards being an introvert. To build relationships required me to speak up more and that required me to constantly step outside of my comfort zone. It was difficult in the beginning, but my biggest piece of advice would be to focus on your end goal and know that nothing good ever comes from your comfort zone. You must be willing to get out of that comfort zone, so that you can step into your success zone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You can’t come to the city and not go downtown! Everything fun and exciting is happening downtown! I love the downtown area because it has a little bit of everything to fit every type of vibe you’re looking for. Whether that is somewhere to have a good drink, have a night out playing arcade games, or having dinner on the rooftop! Two of my favorite food & drinks spots here is Hendrix (they have an amazing rooftop, along with great drinks & food!) and Ambrosia (they also have a beautiful rooftop and some of the best food that I’ve had in the city – everything on the menu is awesome). After food and drinks, I’d probably take it over to the Grand! Not only do they have a great food & beverage menu, there is also a bowling inside, along with an arcade game room.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my amazing soon-to-be husband. I am so grateful for you!! He supports and pours into me like no other. I am so appreciative of him for creating a space where I can fully show up in my businesses and be myself. I am grateful for him for always believing in me and pushing me to be my best self, even when I don’t always feel like it or believe in me. Entrepreneurship is not always easy, it can be very up & down. I am grateful for my support system that have eyes to see & believes in my vision no matter what, even when I am having a challenging time or don’t always see it.
