We had the good fortune of connecting with JenVon Cherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JenVon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve had epilepsy for thirty five years and I never realized how powerful my story was until about five years ago. I started talking more about my journey with epilepsy. Good and bad because I felt like people living with epilepsy needed to hear that as well. To me there was a huge lack of awareness in the black and brown communities. I wanted to have an organization that catered to that community.

What should our readers know about your business?
Epitome of Epilepsy is a nonprofit organization based out of Charleston, SC. Our mission is to serve those affected by epilepsy through education, inspiration and advocacy.

I’m most proud of myself and stepping out on faith to achieve my goals. I always knew I wanted to help others with my personal connection to epilepsy.

How did I get to where I am now? I don’t even think I’ve touched the surface yet. I’m in the beginning stages but Epitome of Epilepsy is definitely making moves. It wasn’t easy at but definitely worthwhile.

I want the world to know that 1 in 26 people are diagnosed with epilepsy. African American are diagnosed more than Whites. Epilepsy is just as dangerous as cancer but unfortunately we don’t talk about it. Epitome of Epilepsy is going on year three and I’m happy with the progress we’re making. 2024 is honestly going to the best year yet for Epitome of Epilepsy and my board. Having a supportive board is so important. We will have our third annual Jewels of Epilepsy Walk and Health Fair. I’m just excited to know that EOE will be helping people like myself and care givers manage their epilepsy diagnosis.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friends were visiting Charleston. Which has definitely happened!

We would do brunch at Slightly North of Board. If you’ve had there chicken and waffles!! So good!!

We would definitely do lunch at Rodney Scott for some good barbecue!

Dinner would definitely have to be Hanks! A good meal and great drinks for my friends!!!

Depending the weather the Downtown Charleston is gorgeous in the spring, fall , and summer. Take pictures by the battery for sure.

I would definitely have to take my girls to the new International African American Museum to sook up some history and culture.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a personal shoutout to my mom and stepdad. Due to my epilepsy I had to stop working in the prime of my career. They’ve supported me through this whole process. My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader and my personal driver. My stepdad never fails to show up for me in any way possible. My brother has always been my protector. He has seen me go through this epilepsy journey. My significant other has showed me the true meaning of what love is. Dating with epilepsy is not easy. I thank God for blessing me with him. My family and friends are the best honestly. I’m so grateful to have a strong support system.
