We had the good fortune of connecting with Deshawn S. Grant, II and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deshawn S., do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
When considering a career in being a chef, it is important to ask yourself if you are still passionate about the craft and what you can contribute to the world, one dish at a time. If you are still finding joy and a sense of service in the work you are doing, then you know you are on the right track. However, if you find yourself no longer satisfied from within and no longer happy, it may be time to consider giving up. The key to success in any career is finding happiness in the work you are doing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a hardworking Chef with a passion for creating delicious meals and bringing joy to people through food. I also have curated my own seasoning; Deshawn’s Everythang’ Seasoning. Despite still being in the process of developing my skills, I am dedicated to learning and improving every day. I am excited about the future and believe that my love for cooking can make a positive impact on the world. Overcoming challenges is a part of my journey, and I do so by being persistent and learning from my mistakes. It has not been easy, especially as a disabled War Veteran starting my own business from scratch. However, I genuinely enjoy every aspect of the culinary process, from sourcing ingredients to designing menus. I constantly seek to expand my skills and discover new recipes by immersing myself in different cultures through travel. What I am doing today is setting up the future for my family’s generations after me. A brand that the world will soon see and love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Arrive in Greenville and check into our hotel the Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville. Go for a walk around downtown and especially walk over the Liberty Bridge in Falls Park. Maybe rent a bike or a scooter to let the wind run through our hair while taking in the picturesque views.
Have lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area, such as The Lost Cajun or White Wine and Butter!
To let our hair down and go to a place where they love Chef Deshawn at Social Latitude where we can sing karaoke, play vintage video games to throwing axes and virtual sports!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out Southern Way Catering in Greenville and Columbia, SC. They really believe in me and support me! They allow me to be a chef and use my talents! Miss Liberty Belle in Greenville, SC; a non-profit organization that assists Veterans during all stages of life and Mrs. Tracy from Operation Boot Print in Greenville, SC! I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without her and her non profit organization that helps Veterans on the home front!
