We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Gregoire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nikki, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I can’t really take credit for having any sort of brilliant idea to start Bespattered Facade, it sort of just “happened,” and I like to (jokingly) call it my “accidental business.” I’ve always been creative in one way or another, and I’ve always enjoyed painting. I started toying around with a painting technique I saw online, called “fluid art” or “pour painting.” It involves a visually interesting painting process that I thought it might be fun to film and post online, so I created the Bespattered Facade Instagram account and things took off from there. I never expected to gain the popularity that I have on social media, and things just grew from there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve gotten where I am today partly by blind luck, and mostly from the support of my friends. I have a professional background, pre-art, in advertising, which has done a lot to help me figure out what to do once Bespattered Facade took off. I’ve (thankfully) managed to gather a group of friends/family whose professional expertise has been a huge part of my ability to get things where they are today.

Art is easy, writing is easy (for me), figuring out how to create a website is not even close to easy, but I know a developer who was able to get me started and then help me along the way as problems inevitably arise. I would be stuck on a marketplace platform paying crazy fees without her help. (Love you Tabby!)

Social media functionality and strategy makes me head hurt, but luckily, I have Lauren to explain things to me and help me get pointed in the right direction.

And last, but not least, my husband is my “unpaid art director/photographer.” He helps me with all my art direction, photography, and graphic design needs. Otherwise, I’d just be taking terrible pictures with my phone and ordering materials based on generic templates. Professionally creative directed marketing and presentation really helps to take things to the next level.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Charleston has no shortage of good food and entertainment. Obviously, we’d head downtown to see the historic architecture that Charleston is famous for and swing by the market to see creations by talented Charleston artists and craftspeople. As far as food goes, you can spin in a circle, point in a random direction and blindly walk into almost any restaurant to find good food, bonus points if they have a rooftop bar as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to Lauren Wiggins. Creating the Instagram account that started this creative journey was her idea, and she’s helped me figure out how to run a popular social media account and navigate and entirely new situation I’ve found myself in.
